The Grassenbiwak is located at 2647 m on the Wendenjoch between Engelberg and Gadmen. The simple SAC bivouac is a year-round starting point for high-altitude tours on the Titlis.
The Grassenbiwak is a simple bivouac run by the Engelberg SAC section at 2647 m on the Wendenjoch between Titlis and Grassen in the canton of Obwalden. The small hut offers a simple lounge and sleeping area and is designed as a year-round, unattended shelter for self-catering alpinists. From the ridge high above the Engelberg Valley, there is a view of the Titliswand and several glaciers; the bivouac serves as a starting point for alpine tours on the Grassen, climbing routes on the south face of the Titlis and ski and snowshoe tours. There is no catering, but a wood-burning stove, firewood and cooking and eating utensils are available; you must bring all your own food. The water comes from a rainwater reservoir in summer and from melted snow in winter. The normal ascent begins at the valley station of the Fürenalp cable car near Engelberg, which can be reached by car or free bus from the train station. From there, the white-blue-white marked mountain trail leads via Herrenrüti, Firnalpeli, Ober Stäfeli and Gorisegg to the bivouac in around 4 hours 45 minutes with an altitude difference of around 1590 meters; depending on the season, crampons and alpine equipment may be required. Other alpine approaches lead from Gadmen via Wendenboden or from the Titlis mountain station. Depending on the snow conditions, the main season runs from around June to October as well as during the winter ski touring months; the current weather, snow and route conditions as well as any closures should be carefully checked before each tour.

Rooms

The Grassenbiwak is an unattended shelter bivouac with a simple lounge and sleeping area. It offers 14 regular sleeping places with mattresses and blankets as well as 4 additional emergency places; all regular places must be reserved in advance via the SAC reservation portal. A hut sleeping bag is obligatory and the emergency places are reserved for real emergencies. The hut is heated by a wood-burning stove and firewood is available. The toilet is located around 80 m from the bivouac in the direction of Titlis. In summer, drinking water is collected as rainwater from the roof in a tank and must be boiled; in winter, snow is melted. Inside, mobile phone reception is limited; the best reception is usually outside by the flagpole. Guests are asked to sign the hut book, keep the bivouac clean and leave it as they would like to find it themselves.

Food and drink

The bivouac has a wood-burning stove with firewood provided, all cooking and eating utensils are available, you only need to bring your own food. A special attraction is the small wine cellar with red and white wine on a trust basis, the consumption of which is paid for in the bivouac.
