The Dent Blanche bivouac is located at 3540 m on the pass between Dent Blanche and Grand Cornier above Ferpècle in Valais. It offers 15 simple sleeping places for high-altitude tours.
The Dent Blanche bivouac, officially Bivouac au Col de la Dent Blanche, is a small, unattended shelter run by the Jaman section of the Swiss Alpine Club. It stands at 3540 m on the pass between Dent Blanche and Grand Cornier high above the end of the Ferpècle valley in the canton of Valais and offers 15 simple campsites. The hexagonal stone building was erected in 1976 and serves as a starting point for challenging high-altitude tours on the Dent Blanche, the Grand Cornier and the surrounding ridges. There is no maintenance or catering, all guests must bring their own provisions, stove, gas and water treatment; blankets, mattresses and simple crockery are provided. Water is only available in the form of snow and ice, which has to be melted and boiled on site, and there is neither electricity nor reliable mobile phone reception. The ascent begins in Ferpècle (Les Salays) and takes around 5 to 6 hours over tracks, moraines and the Dent Blanche glacier to the pass, with around 1700 vertical meters to climb. The bivouac is mainly used in the classic high-altitude touring season in summer and early fall; in winter, the shelter remains open, but the approach is then much more challenging and dependent on road closures in the Val d'Hérens. It is less suitable as an excursion destination for beginners than as a staging post on long ridge tours and crossings between the neighboring huts. Before each tour, you should carefully check the current conditions, any road closures, avalanche and weather conditions and allow sufficient time.

Rooms

Inside the Dent-Blanche bivouac there is a simple mattress dormitory with a total of 15 sleeping places; mattresses, blankets and pillows are available, but you must bring your own hut sleeping bag. The room also serves as a winter room all year round and is open without a hut warden, which is why consideration and registration in the hut book are particularly important. There is no light, electricity or heating, and water has to be obtained from snow or ice. There are no permanent cooking facilities; if you want to cook hot meals, bring your own stove and fuel and leave the small hut clean. The overnight stay is paid for after the descent with a payment slip to the Jaman section. As there is hardly any mobile phone reception, tours and emergency strategies should be carefully planned in the valley.

Directions

The starting point is the valley village of Ferpècle (Les Salays) at the end of the road. From there, an initially marked mountain path, later boulder terrain and glacier leads over the Dent Blanche glacier up to the Col de la Dent Blanche; depending on the conditions, you should plan around 5 to 6 hours and around 1700 meters of altitude.

Parking

The journey by car takes you through the Val d'Hérens to Les Haudères and on towards La Forclaz and Ferpècle. At the end of the valley, there are only a few official parking options along the narrow mountain road and just before the Ferpècle dam; if there is a large crowd, it is advisable to use the signposted parking spaces in the municipality of Evolène or to use public transport.
