The Chelenalp hut at 2350 m in the Chelenalp valley is an SAC hut run by the Aarau section. It serves as a base for the Sustenhorn, Gwächtenhorn and the 5-hut panorama trail.
The Chelenalp hut is located at 2350 m in the secluded Chelenalp valley above Göschenen in the canton of Uri. The mountain hut belongs to the Aarau section of the Swiss Alpine Club and stands on a rocky terrace at the southern foot of the Sustenhorn with a view of the Gwächtenhorn and Tierbergen glaciers. During the hut season, it is manned continuously from mid-June to mid-October, in spring it is usually open for ski tours from the beginning of March to mid-April; outside these times, a small winter room is available. From the bus stop and the parking lot at the Dammagletscher mountain inn on the Göscheneralp, the hut can be reached in around three hours on a marked path along the reservoir, with a total ascent of around 720 meters. In winter, the ascent takes five to six hours from Göschenen on skis or snowshoes. The hut serves as a base for high-altitude tours on the Sustenhorn, Gwächtenhorn and Tierberge as well as for crossings to the Bergsee and Dammahütte huts and is part of the challenging 5-hut panorama trail and the Uri Haute Route. Visitors should check the current weather, snow and avalanche conditions as well as any trail closures before each tour and adapt their equipment accordingly. The first Chelenalp hut was built in 1903, followed by a new stone building in 1926, which has since been extended several times and extensively renovated in 1990 following avalanche damage.

Rooms

The Chelenalphütte has around 40 beds in summer and 30 beds in winter in simple multi-bed rooms with comforters and pillows; a sleeping bag is obligatory. In addition, a winter room with seven beds, a wood-burning stove and basic cooking facilities is available during the unattended season. Reservations are welcome for both the hut season and the winter room and can be made online or by telephone. It is not possible to cook for yourself as long as the hut is manned. Payment is made exclusively in cash in Swiss francs or euros, card payment is not possible. Water, sanitary facilities and a basic power supply are available, but there is neither mobile phone reception nor WLAN; in emergencies, you should expect to only have access to a network again after a walk. Dogs are only allowed by prior arrangement and are not allowed to sleep in the guest lounge or camp, but in the technical room.

Food and drink

The Chelenalphütte serves fresh, seasonal cuisine with a strong connection to the canton of Uri. Many products come from regional suppliers, the vegetables from their own garden in the valley and are often carried up on foot. Particularly popular are the homemade cakes, spaetzli, syrup and blueberry liqueur, which can be enjoyed on the sun terrace with views of the Sustenhorn and Göscheneralpsee.
