The Chamanna Jenatsch lies at 2652 m at the very back of the Val Bever between the Julier and Albula passes. The SAC hut of the Bernina section is a base for summer and ski tours.
The Chamanna Jenatsch is an SAC hut belonging to the Bernina section and is located at 2652 m in the Val Bever in the Albula Alps, surrounded by peaks such as Piz Picuogl and Piz Jenatsch. It is the highest SAC hut in the canton of Graubünden and is a quiet base away from the mountain railroads. The hut is usually manned from the end of June to mid-October and in winter over Christmas/New Year and from mid-February to the end of April, making it suitable for alpine hikes and multi-day tours such as the Bernina Trek or the Haute Route Graubünden as well as for ski tours. There are a total of 73 beds available: several large, bright dormitories as well as two double rooms and a 4-bed family room, which also makes it attractive for families and small groups. In culinary terms, the hut team focuses on regional and seasonal cuisine with homemade bread, cakes and specialties such as pumpkin pie or "Paangesch" with larch syrup; half-board includes a multi-course dinner, breakfast and a liter of marching tea, vegetarian options and consideration for allergies by prior arrangement. The most popular approach leads from the Julier Pass, from the La Veduta stop via the Val d'Agnel and the Fuorcla d'Agnel to the hut in around 3.5 hours with an altitude difference of around 900 meters; from Spinas in Val Bever, the ascent takes 4 to 5 hours with an altitude difference of just under 1000 meters. Other routes lead from Alp Flix via Fuorcla da Flix or from Piz Nair via Fuorcla Suvretta. The hut is supplied with electricity from a small water turbine and photovoltaics, water comes from a spring in summer and from the stream in winter; wood is used for heating and cooking in cold weather. A winter room with a wood stove, cooking utensils and storage is open outside of maintenance times. The first hut was built in 1908, later extended several times and largely rebuilt in 1993; it is named after the Grisons folk hero Jörg Jenatsch. Before every tour, the current conditions, route closures, avalanche situation and weather forecast should be checked and the route carefully planned.

Rooms

The Chamanna Jenatsch offers 73 beds, most of them in three large, bright dormitories with around 18 to 19 beds each, as well as two double rooms with a double bed and a 4-bed family room. Pillowcases and towels are provided in the rooms, but you must bring your own sleeping bag. Reservations are mandatory, as the hut is often well booked. Cancellation conditions are regulated in the general terms and conditions and provide for cancellations free of charge up to two days before arrival. The hut has a cozy lounge, toilets and washing facilities, drying facilities for wet equipment and electricity from hydropower and photovoltaics. Spring water is available in summer, in winter water is pumped up from the stream or melted from snow in the winter room; a wood-burning stove provides warmth in the cold season. The winter room is open when the hut is unattended, has a wood stove, cooking utensils and a store with blankets and is also only used after prior reservation; payment is made in cash on site or by bank transfer. Payment at the serviced hut is usually made the evening before departure, in cash in CHF or euros or by debit or credit card. There are hut boots in many sizes available in the boot room; mountain boots, poles and ice axes remain there, the living areas are only entered with hut boots.

Food and drink

The hut kitchen works largely with fresh, regional and seasonal products and has been awarded the "Fait Maison" label, which stands for home-made dishes. Half-board includes a multi-course dinner, breakfast and one liter of marching tea per person; vegetarian menus and special requirements for allergies are catered for by prior arrangement. During the day, simple hot dishes such as rösti, regional specialties such as the sweet "Paangesch" with larch syrup as well as fresh bread, cakes and pumpkin pie are offered.

Directions

The classic approach begins at the Julier Pass near La Veduta: a marked mountain trail leads through the Val d'Agnel to the Fuorcla d'Agnel and from there over boulder terrain and a short final ascent in around 3.5 hours with an elevation gain of around 900 meters to the Chamanna Jenatsch. From Spinas in Val Bever, the hut can be reached in 4 to 5 hours and an altitude difference of just under 1000 meters via the valley path and a steeper final section. Other variants lead from Alp Flix via Fuorcla da Flix or from Piz Nair via Fuorcla Suvretta; in winter, the normal approach is a ski tour from the Julier Pass via Fuorcla d'Agnel.

Parking

Most guests use the large parking lot below the Hospiz La Veduta on the Julier Pass road for the ascent; parking is free there, but the spaces are often full. There are other official parking options at the top of the pass and at Alp Güglia, from where the marked access routes to Chamanna Jenatsch begin.
