The Motterascio hut is located at 2172 m on the Alpe Motterascio on the southern edge of the Greina. The SAC hut is the starting point for hikes and summit destinations in the Greina region.
The Motterascio Hut (Capanna Michela Motterascio) is a hut run by the SAC Ticino section and stands at 2172 m on the Alpe Motterascio on the southern edge of the Greina high plateau above the Lago di Luzzone in the upper Blenio Valley. The terrace and the two dining rooms offer views of peaks such as Piz Terri, Piz Coroi, Vial, Gaglianera and Piz Valdraus; the hut is an ideal base for multi-day Greina crossings, the Greina Alta trek, leisurely family hikes and more challenging tours to the surrounding three-thousand-metre peaks. The hut is usually open from mid-June to mid-October; outside of this period, there is a winter room with ten beds, where drinks, wood and basic provisions are available, but no running water or winter toilets. The hut can usually be reached on foot from Lago di Luzzone or from Alp Garzott, where marked mountain trails lead up in around 2 to 3 hours and with an altitude difference of around 600 to 700 meters; other approaches are from Ghirone via Val Camadra, from Pian Geirètt and from Vrin and Vals. Thanks to the PostBus to Ghirone and Bus Alpin to Lago di Luzzone or Pian Geirètt as well as parking spaces at the dam wall, the approach can be easily combined with public transport or the car to the starting point. During the serviced season, the kitchen offers simple hot and cold dishes, traditional Ticino specialties, homemade cakes and an evening menu with soup, salad, main course and dessert; breakfast is served as a buffet, vegetarian and vegan menus are available by prior arrangement. The Motterascio hut was built in 1967, extensively renovated in 2006 and belongs to the Ticino section of the Swiss Alpine Club. Current trail conditions, closures and weather conditions should be checked before every tour, as the Greina is a high-altitude, alpine area that requires careful planning despite well-marked trails.

Rooms

The Motterascio hut offers around 70 beds in four rooms with 4 beds each, four rooms with 8 beds each and two attic rooms with 10 and 14 beds. All beds are equipped with warm comforters, the use of a hut sleeping bag is obligatory; if you don't have your own, you can buy a disposable bag at the hut or hire one. Two dining rooms - a bright panorama room with large windows and a smaller, cozier dining room - together offer a good 70 seats. The sanitary facilities with toilets are located in the building, there is a shower, which can be used for a small fee, as well as a simple washing cubicle and a drying room for wet equipment. Water and electricity are provided via the hut's infrastructure, heating is provided by wood, lighting is provided by solar panels; 220-volt sockets are only available to a limited extent. Mobile phone reception is very weak or non-existent in and around the hut, but there is Wi-Fi when the hut is manned, so that contact can be made in an emergency. During the unattended period, there is a winter room with ten beds and comforters, where drinks, wood and basic provisions are available; water must be obtained from the snow if the pipes are frozen, and there is no separate winter toilet. Reservations are strongly recommended and, according to official information, are mandatory, both for the serviced season and for the winter room; bookings can be made online, by e-mail or by telephone. According to the hut rules, it is quiet at night from 10 p.m., pets are not allowed in the bedrooms and guests are asked to make up their beds, leave the rooms tidy and make a note of any emergency equipment used.

Food and drink

During the serviced season, simple hot and cold dishes, dishes from Ticino cuisine and homemade cakes are served on the sun terrace and in the dining rooms. For overnight guests, there is a multi-course dinner with changing specialties as well as a rich breakfast buffet; vegetarian, vegan and allergy-friendly menus are prepared by prior arrangement.

Public transport

Travel by train to Ticino and continue by post bus to Ghirone in the Blenio Valley. In the summer season, an Alpine bus runs from there either to the Lago di Luzzone dam or to Pian Geirètt, from where well-marked mountain trails lead to the Motterascio hut in around 2 to 3 hours. The hut can thus be easily reached by public transport to the respective starting point and then on foot.

Directions

Hikers most often start at the dam wall of Lago di Luzzone or at Alp Garzott: from there, follow the marked mountain trails across the alpine meadows of Alpe di Motterascio, cross streams and ascend in several stages to the hut. Depending on the starting point, this takes around 2 to 3 hours and involves an ascent of around 600 to 700 meters; other approaches lead from Ghirone through the Val Camadra or from Pian Geirètt via the Greina plateau.

Parking

Those arriving by car follow the Lukmanierstrasse into the Blenio Valley as far as Campo Blenio and on to Ghirone. From there, a mountain road leads up to the dam wall of Lago di Luzzone, where parking spaces are available at the barrier and along the lake; there are further parking facilities near Alp Garzott. Alternatively, you can park your car in the village of Ghirone and take the Alpin bus to Lago di Luzzone or to Pian Geirètt and from there walk up to the hut.
