The Britannia Hut SAC is located at 3030 m above Saas-Fee at the foot of the Allalinhorn. The modern hut of the Geneva section is an important base for the Valais Haute Route.

The Britannia Hut SAC is located at 3030 m between Hinter and Klein Allalin above Saas-Fee in Valais and belongs to the Geneva section of the Swiss Alpine Club. It is a central base for the Valais Haute Route and the starting point for high-altitude tours on the Strahlhorn, Rimpfischhorn and Allalinhorn as well as for the Britannia via ferrata. The hut is open from March to May and from mid-June to the end of September; in spring it is mainly open to ski tourers, in summer mainly to mountain hikers and alpinists. The normal ascent from the Felskinn mountain station via Egginerjoch takes around 1 to 1.5 hours; alternatively, there are longer ascents from Morenia, Saas-Fee, Saas-Almagell or from the Mattmark dam. Opened in 1912, the hut has been extended several times, completely renovated in 1997 and energy-optimized in 2022 and is now run by the hut wardens Konstantin Zurbriggen and Maria Anthamatten. The current conditions, avalanche and glacier situation, closures and weather forecasts should be carefully checked before every tour.

Take the train to Visp and then the Postbus line 511 to the Saas-Fee bus terminal. From there, take the Alpin Express/Morenia cable cars or the Felskinn cable car directly to the starting point of the hut ascent.

Directions

The normal route starts at the Felskinn mountain station above Saas-Fee and leads via Egginerjoch and the Chessjen area to the Britannia hut in around 1 to 1.5 hours, with an ascent of around 150 m and a descent of 100 m. In summer, there are also longer approaches from Morenia, Saas-Fee and Saas-Almagell (around 4 to 4.5 hours each) as well as a high-alpine Glacier Trail from the Mattmark dam.
