The Binntalhütte is located at around 2270 m near the Albrun Pass in the Binntal valley near Binn in Valais. The SAC hut is a popular starting point for mountain tours and crossings towards Italy.
The Binntalhütte is an SAC hut belonging to the Delémont section and is located in the far Binntal valley above Binn in the canton of Valais, around 30 minutes' walk below the Albrun Pass at around 2270 m above sea level. It is located in the middle of the Binntal Landscape Park, a tranquil mineral and flower landscape, and serves as a stage stop on the Walser Route and Via Alpina as well as a base for tours to the Ofenhorn and other border peaks. The hut is manned from the end of June to around the beginning of October, outside of this time a large winter room is open; at Christmas, New Year and over Easter it is also partially manned. In summer, breakfast, dinner, snacks, cakes and drinks are offered, as well as packed lunches on request, often with regional products. The ascent is usually from Fäld in Binntal (around 3 hours and around 750-800 meters in altitude) or from Binn; in summer, the Bus Alpin makes it easier to get to Brunnebiel, from where it takes around 2 hours to walk to the hut. From the Italian side, it can be reached via the Albrun Pass from Alpe Devero or via Lake Vannino and Scatta Minoia from Valdo. The best conditions for hiking usually prevail from June to October; in winter, the hut is used as a simple base for ski and snow tours. Before each tour, you should carefully check the current trail and avalanche conditions, any closures and the weather forecast.

Rooms

The Binntalhütte offers a total of 50 beds in several renovated, segmented dormitories and smaller rooms, which were redesigned in 2018 as part of a gentle renovation. In winter, a large, unattended shelter is available, which remains open even when the hut is not manned. The sleeping areas are equipped with blankets and pillows, a personal linen sleeping bag is mandatory; hut shoes are provided. The hut is run by volunteers from the Delémont SAC section; reservations are mandatory for overnight stays in the serviced season to ensure a bed and meals. Water comes from a spring above the hut and is drawn from a stream in summer if required; it is not considered drinking water; electricity and hot water are generated by solar panels. Dogs are not allowed in the hut rooms; there is a place for them in the shed next door. Payment is made in cash in Swiss francs or euros, credit cards are not accepted.

Food and drink

During the serviced season, a simple, hearty evening meal and breakfast are served; dinner is usually served at 7 pm and breakfast between around 6.30 am and 8 am. During the day, cakes, snacks, drinks and packed lunches are available on request, including products from the Landscape Park such as Binn alpine cheese, rye flour from the Binn Valley or beer from the Binn mountain brewery, especially during the Park Products Week.

Public transport

Travel by train to Fiesch in the Rhone Valley, from where post buses run via Ernen to Binn. In summer, the Bus Alpin connects Binn with Fäld and Brunnebiel; these stops are the usual starting points for the ascent to the Binntalhütte. From Italy, the journey is by train and bus to Val Formazza or Alpe Devero, from where the hut can be reached on foot over mountain passes.

Directions

The classic starting point is the hamlet of Fäld in Binntal: from the bus stop or the parking lot, follow the signposted route across the moorland near Lengenbach and the alpine meadows of Freichi up to the Binntalhütte, for which you should plan around 3 hours and around 750 meters in altitude, depending on your fitness level. If you take the Alpine bus or cab to Brunnebiel, the ascent is reduced to around 2 hours; from Binn itself, depending on the route chosen, you can expect to walk for just under 4 hours.

Parking

To reach the hut by car, drive from Ernen into the Binntal valley to Binn; there are signposted parking facilities along the road towards Fäld, from where you can access the hut or take the Alpin bus to Fäld and Brunnebiel. There is no direct road to the hut; the last few kilometers are always covered on foot.
