The Balmhorn hut of the SAC Altels section is situated at 1956 m above the Gasterntal valley near Kandersteg. In summer, it is a quiet base for the Gasterespitz and Balmhorn.
At 1956 m, high above the Kandersteg Gasterntal valley, the Balmhorn hut of the SAC Altels section stands on a small high plateau at the north-facing foot of the Balmhorn. It is usually open from mid-June to mid-October; outside of this period it remains closed and there is no winter room. During the season, drinks, simple meals and half board are offered; dinner is at 18:30, breakfast is adjusted depending on the tour and conditions. The normal ascent leads from Kandersteg via Eggenschwand through the Gasterntal valley; from Eggenschwand it takes around 1:30-2:00 hours and an altitude difference of around 820 meters. If you have a permit, you can take the narrow road into the Gasterntal, but the last section remains a marked mountain trail. The hut is suitable as a day's destination and as a starting point for the Gasterespitz as well as for further tours towards Wildelsiggrat and Balmhorn. Check current conditions, maintenance, possible closures and weather before each tour.

Rooms
The hut has 20 sleeping places, divided into three rooms; comforters are available, a hut sleeping bag is required. Behind the hut there is a toilet and washing facilities with cold running water. Lighting is provided by solar power; cell phone charging can be arranged with the hut team. Families with children are welcome, but overnight stays with small children are not recommended. Dogs are generally allowed; overnight in a dog box in the attached wooden shed by prior arrangement. Self-caterers can cook in front of the hut, eat in the dining room and stay overnight as normal; the hut kitchen is not available to self-caterers during the summer season.
