Os Abrigos são antigos palheiros que foram reconstruídos utilizando métodos tradicionais e materiais ecológicos, para dar apoio à Grande Rota de Santa Maria e permitir fazer o trilho na totalidade.

A 50 metros do trilho, no lado oposto da “Casa do Norte”, vai encontrar o terceiro albergue, o Abrigo do Norte. Com uma vista aberta sobre o oceano, somente o mugir das vacas pode perturbar este local tão calmo. Em dias de céu aberto consegue ver a Ilha de São Miguel em frente e as suas luzes à noite. Tente encontrar o Ilhéu das Formigas, que fica entre Santa Maria e São Miguel, com os binóculos disponíveis no Abrigo. O Ilhéu está assinalado com um farol.
