Hiking in Weilersbach

How wonderful the viewpoints and romantic the hiking trails are on this hike near Forchheim in Upper Franconia. Equally spooky and beautiful are some of the legends from this area.

Walk with a View of Walberla and Albvorland The brightly shining chapel Reifenberg above the valley already draws attention from afar. Allegedly, it is called the Vexierkapelle (puzzle chapel) because it appears different from every perspective, captivating and deceiving the eye at the same time. Built on a high pulpit at the site of a former castle, it offers an incomparable view especially in spring over the widely spreading Wiesent valley, the lovely fertile plains, and towards the steep, forested rise of the Alb heights. In between, the plateau of the "Walberla" (actually Ehrenbürg) rises unmistakably like a natural fortress.

From Wiesenthau train station (Gasthaus Zur Eisenbahn) past Wiesenthau to the Lindenkeller. Continue to the other side of the valley and to the Schweizerkeller. Now uphill to Weilersbach to the Hut-Keller and over Vexierkappel to the Reifenbeger Keller. Finally, cross over Reifenbach back to the other side of the valley to Pretzfeld to the Nikl Brewery. Alternatively, instead of the Nikl Brewery, first to the Pretzfelder Keller and then to the Nikl Brewery. Return to Pretzfeld train station.

The ascent from the parking lot to the Retterner Kanzel is fantastic. Once at the top, some orientation is needed to find the path. At the Vexier Chapel, we were very lucky as a supervisor happened to come with the key. See pictures of the interior of the chapel.
