The Central Alpine Long Distance Trail 02 was inaugurated in 1978 and in its western part deserves the designation alpine high route. At the very eastern edge of the Alps, however, it still passes through flat and hilly land as well as pre-alpine terrain. It crosses the federal states of Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria, Salzburg, Carinthia, Tyrol and Vorarlberg, touching the Danube Floodplain and High Tauern National Parks.
