An imposing castle complete with a venerable hermitageVisible from afar, the Castell de Montgrí is a prominent landmark in the flat Empordà region. Conversely, when looking out from the round towers of this medieval fortress, one can easily imagine how vast expanses of land were kept under close watch from this vantage point. The hike up and around the limestone dome on which the castle is perched offers beautiful garrigue scenery, an unexpected abundance of plant life, and—on a detour—the curiosity of a dune landscape formed by sand drifts from the beaches of the Gulf of Roses.

On the ten-day long-distance hike, you will encounter a lot of nature, as well as protected medieval villages and walk, among other things, in the footsteps of Salvador Dalí, the eccentric artist with the twirled mustache.
