Via Michaelskreuz, Baumgarten, and the legendary Hohle GasseAt its northern tip, Lake Lucerne is not bordered by high mountains, but by gentler ranges of hills that already bear the character of the Swiss Mittelland. We’ll explore these areas around Küssnacht on a leisurely loop. Along the way, we’ll discover beautiful viewpoints—especially the Michaelskreuz on Rooter Berg—get to know sections of the Lake Zug shoreline that remain in their natural state, and, last but not least, visit historic sites such as the Hohle Gasse with the Tell Chapel or the ruins of Gesslerburg Castle. “He must come through this hollow lane; there is no other way to Küssnacht,” as it says in Friedrich Schiller’s drama *Wilhelm Tell*. Added to this are views of rural farmland, making for a tour that, while not particularly challenging, is nonetheless very varied. It takes a full day of hiking, but thanks to the nearby infrastructure, it can of course be broken down into shorter sections if anyone prefers not to walk 22 kilometers in one go.

A very beautiful moderate hike, can be done all year round, but in the winter months it should be noted that it is not frozen, especially in the forest where it goes quite steeply up and down, hiking poles are recommended. Surefootedness is necessary. There are very beautiful viewpoints throughout the hike. Along the entire path, there are also repeatedly benches. The view of the Alps, especially to the Rigi, and you can also see the Pilatus in the distance, is a true dream for the eyes and soul. However, in general, the view along the whole route is wonderful, also down to Lake Zug. If the weather cooperates.
Highlights of the hike I felt are the following for me:- A wonderful circular route with everything included (uphill as well as downhill) - Excellent view of the Alps and down to Lake Zug.
- At Gisikon-Root train station, you can get refreshments before or after the hike, or also when you have arrived at Michaelskreuz there is a very nice restaurant. Here you should pay attention to the restaurant opening hours.
For your information: Always check the weather first. I had snow and ice in the forest due to the cold and additionally chopped trees on the way, which made the hike even more challenging. (See photo regarding this) For those, hiking poles are advantageous if you have them with you.
Surefootedness and physical condition are absolutely required.
Important: This tour starts directly at the parking lot of the Gisikon-Root train station (paid parking). For the whole day, you pay CHF 5.00.

A very nice moderate hike. Surefootedness is absolutely necessary, especially in the forest section along the Immensee. When the weather is wet, it is quite slippery. Hiking poles are advantageous in this section. Otherwise, the path is very nice, as well as the crossings on various small bridges, which are very beautiful. And parallel to that, the wonderful view of the Immensee is really very nice, including the view over to the Alps. Along the entire trail, there are occasional barbecue spots to relax and grill. The highlights of the hike that I experienced are the following: - Various barbecue spots - Dreamlike view of the Alps and the Immensee - In the warm months, you can also go swimming. Important: This hike starts directly from the parking lot. (free of charge). The parking lot is located opposite the Risch Dorf bus stop.
