Marvels of the Water Engineers – A Canal HikeThe southern part of the Lleida province is one of the driest areas in Catalonia: no good chances for vegetation in the vast plains with their distinctly dry continental climate! However, the Canal d’Urgell channels the water of the Segre over a length of 144 km from Artesa de Segre in many bends through this area and feeds thousands of side canals. With a sophisticated system, the fields are irrigated from these canals, turning the plains into true gardens. The unpleasant part of this tour should be mentioned right away: the livestock factories in the plains stink badly here and there. Apart from that, we find beautiful paths under alders and plane trees, a rich birdlife, interesting facilities of water engineering art, especially the Nou Salts, a staircase of nine water steps including a mini power plant.
