Through a secluded valley to the impressive waterfall at Lac d’OôThe solitary ascent to Couret d’Esquierry, 2,131 m, leads through the unspoiled valley of the Ruisseau d’Aube. Along the way, we have another opportunity to look back at the section of the trail we hiked the day before. However, once we reach the parking lot at the Granges d’Astau—which is also served by a shuttle bus during peak season—the peace and solitude come to an end. The stunningly situated Lac d’Oô, with its 275-meter-high waterfall, attracts numerous day hikers. The trail up to the lake, however, is wide enough for everyone, and so we reach the Refuge du Lac d’Oô at a leisurely pace. It’s a great spot to sit in front of the hut all evening. The masses of water plunging into the lake from such a great height are a truly indescribable sight!

We love hiking from tranquil Loudenvielle to Germ!Today, the trail passes through three historic villages before we enter open pastureland. Hoofed animals have left their tracks here, and the main challenge on this low pass is avoiding the mud holes. The Col d’Azet, at 1,586 m, rewards hikers with a magnificent panoramic view. However, since it’s also accessible by road, you’ll rarely be alone here and will share the idyll with other outdoor enthusiasts, especially paragliders and cyclists. In any case, the region is fully committed to cycling tourism, which represents a promising future for mountain tourism given the decreasing snowfall and the resulting shorter and more unreliable ski season. From the Col d’Azet, the trail descends to the picturesque village of Loudenvielle, situated on the crystal-clear Lac de Génos-Loudenvielle. The village is known for its Balnea thermal baths, which feature two indoor and two outdoor areas. The restaurants invite you to take a break and refuel for the strenuous climb up to the mountain village of Germ.
