Hiking in Err

No. 2 of the eastern Pyrenees, No. 1 for pilgrims and skiers »Puig« means peak, pizzo, piz, so horn, »mal« means bad. But it can't be that bad for the highest summit of the Spanish province of Gerona, or for the second highest summit of the French Pyrénées Catalanes. Neither for the winter sports enthusiasts who can ski up to the summit La Tossa (2662 m) on the French side, nor for the pilgrims starting from the Spanish pilgrimage site Núria. What are the masts for some are the summit markers for others: alongside the survey bolt and the traditional Catalan flag, the Puigmal d’Err is also adorned with various crosses and plaques. A note on the view: under the best conditions, it extends to the Aneto, 3404 m, the highest peak of the entire Pyrenees.

The GR 11 is the highest long-distance trail in Catalan territory.

The GR11 is the most impressive mountain route in Catalan territory. It crosses the Pyrenees on the southern slope, connecting the Mediterranean Sea with the Cantabrian Sea, thus passing through Catalonia and Andorra, Aragon, Navarra, and the Basque Country. In this case, we are dealing with the Catalan and Andorran sections.

The hike starts from Sant Gil from here we head towards Puigmal d'Err (2910m) then along the ridge towards Coll de Finestrelles where we make our way down to Vall de Nuria station.
