Hiking in Châtelus

A Short Hike with a Real Vercors Feel A peaceful loop hike through the Vercors Regional Nature Park, past the hamlet of Piache and through the characteristic mixed landscape of southern Vercors. At just 5.3 kilometers long and with an elevation gain of about 220 meters, this hike is easy to manage—yet still leaves plenty of time to fully soak in the tranquility and vastness of the high plateau. On a historic trade route through the cliffs of the CournousesIn a time when there were no roads, adventurous footpaths over the passes connected the Vercors plateaus to the outside world. The gorges were too dangerous. One of the most important trade routes led over the Pas de l’Allier. Pack animal caravans carried charcoal obtained on the plateaus down to the plains of Royans and brought essential food back up. It was not until around 1920 that new traffic routes were established. Since then, the route has only been frequented by hikers, who especially come because of the impressive views. On the reported round trip, there are breathtaking views into two famous gorges: the Bourne Gorge and the Vernaison Gorge. Wild roads run through both today, which have become tourist attractions. For example, those who chose their way from Pont-en-Royans via the Route des Petits et Grands Goulets know why this road is called the "Road of small and large bottlenecks."

After descending down the GR 36 from the Pyrenees the E4 follows the GR 7 along the southern flank of Massif Central and the GR 4 through the Massif and across the Rhone Valley. It then follows the GR9 up through the Vercors and the Jura before crossing into Switzerland north of Geneva.
