From Mercatello sul Meatauro, ascent is made via paths and dirt roads that mainly run along the ridge, up to Passo di Bocca Trabaria which marks the border with Umbria.

In the Massa TrabariaThe Alpe della Luna is a mountain range in the regions of Tuscany, Marche, and Umbria. The nature reserve of the same name around the highest mountain Monte dei Frati (1454 m) is located in Tuscany a little northwest of the tour. Massa Trabaria is the historical name of the large forest area around the valleys of the rivers Meta and Auro, which join to form the Metauro in Borgo Pace. Similar to some areas in the Alps and the Black Forest, Massa Trabaria, with its main town Sant’Angelo in Vado, was able to maintain a relatively autonomous status. For centuries, the beams for Roman churches and palaces came from Massa Trabaria (Latin »trabea« for beams). But not only tree trunks were sold, but also charcoal. Even today, in the dense mountain forests that stretch over 1000 meters high, you can come across charcoal piles.
