Hiking in Blies-Ebersing

A cross-border hike through more than two millennia of history, taking in Celtic and Gallo-Roman ruins, a medieval castle, and the Blies Valley.

A pleasant walk through villages, forests, and the Blies Valley, exploring the natural heritage and the historic Bliestalbahn.

This 16.2-km historical loop follows several sections of the former border that, in 1768, separated the territories of the former Duchy of Lorraine—which had been incorporated into the Kingdom of France in 1766—from the enclave of Zetting and Dieding, which belonged to the Principality of Nassau-Saarbrücken in the Holy Roman Empire. Winding through the Saar Valley, forests, and agricultural plateaus, the route allows visitors to discover more than twenty sandstone boundary markers. Depending on their state of preservation, they still bear the year 1768, the letters “NS,” the Wolfsangel of Nassau-Saarbrücken, or traces of a fleur-de-lis on the French side. The trail also passes by the Church of Saint Marcel in Zetting and the Gallo-Roman villa at Grosswald.
