Through the Weilersbach Valley—A Forest Hike Along the Biodiversity Trail

This beautiful loop trail first takes us to the Wo-tansborn natural monument. The spring, which has been channeled since 1912, is located a few hundred meters northeast of the boundary of the Weilersbachtal Nature Reserve. Surrounding the spring is a stand of old beech trees covering an area of approximately 2 hectares. The beech grove, which is a good 170 years old, is no longer used for forestry, allowing several biotopes with rare animal and plant species to develop here. With a little luck, you might spot a fire salamander, a pool newt, or the greater impatiens. The return route leads through the Weilersbach Valley and along the “Path of Biodiversity”: This environmental education loop trail features several interesting informational signs and leads up into the Kleinengelein Natural Forest Reserve, where we’ll encounter some impressive giant beech trees.> We start at the Wotansborn 01 hiking parking lot. The trail first takes us down into the forest along a forest path toward Wotansborn, following the R8 marker. After just a few minutes, we reach the Wotansbrunnen 02. Crossing a bridge and some stairs, we ascend to a gravel path, where we turn left and continue following the R10 marker. The trail leads us downhill for 15 minutes to an intersection: here, turn right and continue on the R10 and R8 toward Obersteinbach. We follow the trail, which leads us after about 10 minutes to two forks that come one after the other: we take the second fork to the left, continuing slightly downhill on R10. At the next fork, the trail turns into a paved road. At the T-intersection, we turn left, continuing on R10. We reach Obersteinbach 03 and turn right onto Weilersbachstraße toward Kleinengelein. The road, now a traffic-calmed street, turns into a gravel path that quickly leads us to an information kiosk. A few minutes later, we turn left downhill onto the “Path of Biodiversity” 04. The trail quickly leads us back uphill, around a right-hand curve, now on R2. We follow the wide forest path steadily uphill. At the intersection with the rest bench, continue straight ahead toward Zabelstein; R2 branches off to the left here, but we stay on the Biodiversity Trail. After a good quarter of an hour, a path leads us to the right and down into the forest, along the “Natursteig ins Weilersbachtal” 05. It takes us steadily downhill to the gravel path, where we turn left. After a few steps, we keep to the left again and find ourselves back on R10. We now follow this trail steadily. After about 20 minutes, R10 branches off to the right; we continue straight ahead along the trail by the Weilersbach. Our trail marker is now the OBA1 running trail. Caution: the trail is only sparsely marked! After just under kilometer, we turn right and cross the Weilersbach; after a few steps at the next fork, we turn right again. The path winds its way uphill until we reach a large intersection. Here, we turn left and hike back along the R10 for a few minutes to the Wotansborn 01 hiking parking lot.

The tour takes you through mysterious valleys and gorges, past hidden places in the Steigerwald, from Ebrach to the lovely Main valley to Eltmann / Ebelsbach. You can start your excursion with a visit to the treetop path in Ebrach. You start the tour in the center of Ebrach (bus stop with connection to Bamberg station). After a small climb towards the forest, the path offers you an impressive view of the Cistercian monastery landscape of the market town of Ebrach. Through the famous Ebrach forest with its tall beeches, you reach the valley of the Rauhe Ebrach.  Above the village of Geusfeld (with dining options) you can spend the first night. The place offers you a beautiful view of the Franconian village and the wide valley. A shelter bench can accommodate about 5 people to protect themselves from the rain. You cross the valley, hike through the Kleinengelein Nature Forest Reserve for a stretch on the path of biodiversity over the Weilersbach valley and the Wotansborn, a great place to linger with a sandstone-framed fountain, further to the trekking site Steinknuck, above the glasswork village of Balthasar Neumann (dining options with beer garden). The site offers you the opportunity to engage in some sports once again. Via the famous snake path you reach Zell am Ebersberg, known for its traditional hedge taverns, around the Ebersberg, with great views over the Main valley and the quaint steep slopes of the vineyards, impressive due to the diversity of the landscape, to the trekking site Laubwiese. From here, the path leads you through the beech forests and meadows of the northern Steigerwald to Eltmann on the Main. In Eltmann / Ebelsbach you can take the train back towards Bamberg or Würzburg.
