The Elbe spring is located on the ridge of the Giant Mountains (1386 m) on the Elbe meadow (Labská louka). The actual source of the Elbe is in the peat bogs about 150 to 300 m from here and is not accessible to the public for nature conservation reasons. In 1968, a stone wall with the colored coats of arms of the 26 significant cities was erected here, through which the Elbe flows into the North Sea.

The starting point is the valley station of Medvedin in Spindler Mühle. From here, the ascent towards the Elbe source begins. Beforehand, you can visit a waterfall about 1 km away. From there, continue in the direction of the Elbe source. Afterwards, the descent begins towards the Medvedin cable car middle station. From here, you can take the cable car, look for a hiking trail back to the starting point, or descend via the ski slope. In some places, sure-footedness is required.

For thousands of years, water has held a magical allure for people. At the third waypoint, we reach the source of the eighth-longest river in Europe; this is where the Elbe begins its 1,094-kilometer journey through Europe until it flows into the North Sea. The Giant Mountains are home not only to the highest peaks in the Czech Republic but also to another record-breaker: the Pančava Falls (Pančavský vodopád), at 148 meters, is the country’s highest waterfall. It plunges in cascades from a 250-meter-high cliff face into the Elbe valley. Depending on the season and the flow rate carried by the Pančava, a tributary of the Elbe, the waterfall can be four to eight meters wide. Only the upper part of the Pančava Falls is accessible, as the rest of the falls is located within the protected zone of the national park.

After a comfortable ride up the chairlift to Medvědín (Schlüsselberg) at an elevation of 1,235 meters, a beautiful high-altitude trail leads to the source of the Elbe, which springs from a peat bog on the Elbe Meadow. From there to its mouth, the Elbe flows 1,094 km. The distance to the German border is 358 km. Over the 8.76 km that we follow the Elbe, we see in the so-called Elbgrund how the clear mountain stream becomes a slowly flowing river and later joins the Bilé Labe (Weißwasser). The Elbgrund valley was formed by a glacier and, at 8 km, is one of the longest valleys in the Giant Mountains. Since 1897, the oldest hiking trail in the Giant Mountains has led past the Elbe Waterfall and the Pantsche Waterfall. Rare mountain plants grow in the meadows, while steeply rising rock faces and numerous rock formations border the slopes of the glacial valley.

    Sehr schöne Wanderung, die wir am 30.12.25 gemacht haben. Temperaturen waren -5 bis -12 Grad und ab mittags setzte Schneefall ein. Der erste Teil bis hoch zur Elb-Baude war teilweise vereist aber durch den Schnee konnten wir ganz gut aufsteigen. Man sollte bei diesen Temperaturen eventuell doch Leichtsteigeisen dabei haben. Kurz vor dem Grat haben wir, mein Mann und ich, uns dann auch ordentlich lang gelegt aber es ist nix passiert. Die Baude hatte glücklicherweise offen und man bekommt warmes Essen und Getränke. Erstaunlich wie viele Leute bei solchen Wetterbedingungen hier oben waren. Fast alle hatten allerdings auch Leichtsteigeisen an. Der Abstieg ging dann erst über eine breite Straße und dann ging es wieder auf einem Wanderweg weiter. Und dann am Ende nochmal eine Überraschung, Der Weg führt die Skipiste hinunter ins Tal! War uns sehr unangenehm war und wohl gefühlt haben wir uns wirklich nicht, weil die Pistenbetreiber das wahrscheinlich überhaupt nicht gerne sehen, aber wir konnten keinen Weg abseits der Piste finden. Das ist richtig doof und das sollte man wissen, um doch eventuell einen anderen Weg zurück nach Spindleruv Mlyn zu finden. Deswegen auch nur 4 Sterne. Ansonsten wirklich einen schöne Tour und auch nicht zu anstrengend. Zur Aussicht können wir nichts sagen, da es sehr bedeckt war. Ist bestimmt sehr schön bei gutem Wetter!

    Super tour. Habe die ersten beiden etappen zusammengelegt. Allerdings würde ich die schwierigkeit eher mittel einstufen. Trekkingsröcke nicht vergessen, die machen es einem wesentlich leichter.
