Introduction to Finnish Nature Near HelsinkiJust a few kilometers northeast of Helsinki, the Sipoonkorpi National Park invites you to a first exploration tour of Finnish nature. Founded in 2011, the protected area claims to present all facets of the southern Finnish landscape except for the coast in a compact space. Surrounded by cultural landscapes and suburbs of the Finnish capital, the 35 km² park includes dense pine primeval forests, bare rock summits, streams, forest bogs, and small lakes. Although Sipoonkorpi is surrounded by highways and main roads on the north, west, and south sides, you will be surprised at how quickly you can dive into the original Nordic nature and get lost. The park has several hiking trails; here is introduced the 7.2 km long Kalkinpolttajanpolku including approach path and detour to Bisajärvi/Bisaträsk. Some of the landscape features lie along this route. In the gnarled forests, which belong to the densest in all of Finland, further treasures are hidden such as aapa mires that are otherwise only found in Lapland, nesting places of the rare Ural owl, or orchids like the fly orchid. Salmon swim in the Byabäcken on the east side, although it is only a small stream. The numerous Sibbo vargar, the Sibbo wolves, even gave the local football club its name. In Sipoonkorpi, cultural treasures of the first settlers are also hidden, who came here about 7000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age, when today's forest area was still on the sea coast. The castle Sibbesborg is said to date from the Viking Age and today is only recognizable by the castle moat. One could describe the glacier mills hidden in the forests as a mixture of culture and nature, since on the one hand they were carved from granite by the Ice Age glaciers, and on the other hand, according to an old Finnish folk belief, they were regarded as sacred places associated with the troll Hiisi. Last but not least, Stone Age rock carvings and formations made of stones known as Trojaburg must not be left unmentioned.
The Kalkkiruukki shelter is a great place to take a break along the Kalkinpolttajanpolku trail.
