The cone-shaped Tron (1,665 m), towering over the valley of Norway’s longest river, the Glomma, is the highest mountain between Rondane, Dovrefjell, Forollhogna, and Femundsmarka and offers a correspondingly spectacular view. Since the construction of the transmission tower on the summit in the 1960s, it has been the highest mountain in Norway accessible by road. If the pothole-ridden toll road is actually passable, many hikers start the Tron hike at the saddle near the scenic secondary peak Flattron; if it is impassable, the toll road offers a relatively easy alternative to the steep hiking trail. ▶ The Tronsvangen 01 mountain pasture is situated on a clearing between the valleys of the Søndre Tronsåa and Nordre Tronsåa streams, which flow down the southern flank of the Tron. The access road from the Glomma Valley leads up from the forested valley of the Nordre Tronsåa to the alpine pasture and, after leaving the forest, first passes the turnoff to the former traditional alpine hotel, Tronsvangen Seterhotell, and then the turnoff to the start of our hiking trail. It enters the forest near the last huts, crosses a tributary of the Nordre Tronsåa, and ascends to the scenic ridge between the stream valleys above the tree line. The ascent is steady, steep, and scenic, with the valley of the tributary (on the right) serving as a guide. The calcareous gabbro has made the Tron famous for its rich plant life. As early as the 19th century, naturalists hiked up the Tron to collect plants. Near the summit, the alpine buttercup blooms. There are countless spots for a rest with a view before reaching the summit of the Tron 02 at the transmission tower, which overlooks seven parishes. The toll road is in such poor condition that virtually no cars use it; we use it as our descent route. It winds downhill through scenic switchbacks; numerous trails have formed between the hairpin turns. At Flattron 03, Baral’s grave is located within a stone circle. The yogi Ananda Acharya came to Norway from British India in 1914, gave lectures in Kristiania (Oslo), and settled at the Tronsvangen mountain pasture in 1917, where he liked it so much that he remained there until his death. At that time, there was neither a transmission tower nor a toll road to the summit; Ananda is quoted as saying: “Whoever has not lived alone in the fjell has not yet discovered their own soul.” On Tron, Ananda meditated with two female students and one male student, wrote spiritual books in English, and rode his white horse—wearing a turban, with his hair flowing in the wind and a long beard—to go shopping in Alvdal, where he was very popular and was called Professor Baral. In 1921, he had a vision of founding a peace university on “Mount Tron.” When he passed away in 1945, he was buried in a stone circle on Flattron; the project for a peace university on Tron lives on to this day. From Baral’s grave, the unpaved road descends steeply with scenic views back to the starting point, the Tronsvangen 01 mountain pasture.
