The 10 most beautiful hikes in Trier
Hiking amidst ancient substance - Trier's history
With more than 2000 years of history, Trier can point to a number of famous architectural monuments that have accumulated over this very long period of time and today provide variety on hiking tours. The Porta Nigra in the centre of Trier, the starting point for many walks, the amphitheatre and Trier Cathedral, which is also the oldest of its kind in Germany, are particularly well known. So if you are visiting the city for the first time, it would be a good idea to plan at least one day for sightseeing before going hiking in the surrounding countryside. The best way to do this is the Trier city walk. It covers just under 7 kilometres through the centre of Trier and past all the important sights.
But Trier is not just a city.
Trier is not only known for its long history, but also for its wine. Moselle wine enjoys an excellent reputation among connoisseurs. Hikes to the nearby wine-growing region of Ruwer are also recommended, where a 10 km wine and slate hike invites you to explore.
Trier is also known for its long history and wine.
Trier: Meeting point of the premium trails
Three premium long-distance hiking trails meet in Trier. First of all, there is the Moselsteig, which leads from Perl to Koblenz and runs for 365 kilometres on both sides of the Moselle. In addition, the Eifelsteig, which runs 313 kilometres from here to Kornelimünster near Aachen and crosses the entire Eifel from south to north, ends in Trier or begins in Trier, depending on the direction of travel. Finally, a branch of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig ends in the district of Tarforst, which first leads from here to Grimburg and there merges with the main trail, which also starts in Perl and leads from there over 410 kilometres to Boppard on the Rhine.
Ambitious hikers with sufficient stamina should feel a bit like motorists at the Frankfurt interchange, because from here the route follows a well-maintained infrastructure in all directions. Thanks to the good connections to public transport, you can also hike only individual stages before returning to the starting point.
A fourth, historically significant long-distance hiking trail should not go unmentioned: The Ausonius Trail leads along an old highway on an almost direct route from Trier to Bingen, crossing the entire Hunsrück from west to east. Partially straight for several kilometres, the trail is ideal for hiking tours that focus more on a meditative and relaxed experience. Along the hiking trails there are always magnificent distant views as well as relics from Roman times. Those who do not yet want to embark on a long-distance hiking trail can use the short stages to build up their fitness.
