Only a few tourists find their way to this 185-hectare, desert-like natural landscape. This remarkably unspoiled and pristine dune area has been designated a Natura 2000 site and is part of a network of protected areas within the EU. The purpose of this network is to protect endangered plant and animal species and their natural habitats. The tour has a special appeal: among other things, it leads along a six-kilometer stretch of dunes interspersed with granite cliffs and features crystal-clear water. The return route leads through the interior and past an old mill. Alternatively, you can walk back the same way, as the beach is perfect for swimming and sunbathing afterward. The wind blows steadily across the water, filling your lungs with sea air and rustling the beach grass.> From the start and finish point01 (6 m) at the parking lot, we walk along the road until it ends, then cross the dunes—which are up to 15 m high—to reach the sandy beach. The strong surf continuously washes sand from the seabed onto the beach, while the northwest wind dries the grains and blows them into random piles. Beach grass thrives here and stabilizes the sand with its long, branched roots. Inland, where no fresh sand is blown in, the dune matures into a gray or tertiary dune and eventually into a brown dune with a diverse vegetation of plants that prefer nutrient-poor soils. Depending on weather conditions, you can walk directly on the beach or in the area of the brown dune, where there is a trail. If a strong northwest wind is blowing, it’s better to walk in the wind-sheltered area behind the brown dune. The east-west length of Plage de Ker Eemma02 (2 m) is a staggering 2.9 km. At low tide, the beach is 150 m wide. The beach narrows; we reach a concrete boat ramp, climb over rocks, and discover bizarre rock formations03 (6 m) in the sea. The granite rock on the left looks a bit like a grasshopper standing up. Passing through the semicircle of a small cove, we reach more rocks that we have to climb over. After another 50 m, we turn left across the dunes and follow the wide path to La Chapelle Saint-Guevroc, located about 100 m away. It dates back to the 19th century and was built on the foundations of a chapel from the 15th and 16th centuries. We continue in the same direction and, at the parking lot, turn right again, heading down to the beach. The next section depends heavily on the tide, so you’ll walk either on the beach or through the dunes. You’ll now look out over a vast bay; across from you lies the village of Plounéour-Trez. We walk around another headland and follow a stone wall. As soon as we reach the first of two stone walls jutting into the water, we leave the beach via the path heading inland and proceed across the parking lot to State Road D1004 (3 m). There, we turn right, and after a few meters, we cross the road to the left and continue on the dirt road—not the driveway to the house. In front of a large field, the path winds through two left turns and one right turn until it reaches a farmstead. At the fork in the path, we take the path slightly to the right; at the end of the road—near a stone house—we turn right. After crossing a stream, we take the second street on the left, then, behind the stone house with the white windows, at the next fork in the path, we head slightly to the left. This road ends behind a small patch of woods; there, we turn right along the parking bay and immediately left again, toward the village of Ruvas. At a red-and-white garden gate, we cross the next road and continue straight ahead on a dirt path. The next section of the trail now leads directly through a cornfield. A path has been cleared here specifically for this purpose; I just hope this clearing is re-established every year—otherwise, you’ll have to improvise and go around it. At the end of the gravel road ahead, we turn right at the road and then immediately left—at a small wooden hut—and walk behind a property along a farm road that runs alongside the fields. After a left-hand bend, the trail ends at a road. There, we turn right, leave the road at the next right-hand bend—at house number 4—and continue straight ahead on a narrow path. After a short descent, we reach the Le Frout stream; we turn right to cross over to the other bank via stone slabs at the old mill05 (9 m). Since this section of the trail is rarely used, there’s barely a discernible path, and you may have to fight your way through stinging nettles. Immediately past the mill, we continue on the steeply ascending path; at the next fork, we take the path slightly to the right, following the edge of the field until we reach the road and the barn with the green wall. Immediately past this building, we turn left and walk along the edge of the field, passing another stone house; at the next fork, we turn right, and at the following farm road intersection, we continue straight ahead. As soon as we see houses 200 meters away, we turn right onto the farm road and then left at the next street. We follow this road, which has very little traffic, back to the starting point.
