An extraordinarily eventful river hike with surprisingly wild, natural river sections. You can return to your car by train, which runs hourly, from any larger town along the route. We did the route in winter, which works very well if there is not too much snow. There are many beautiful views of the river; the photos show only a little of it. Simply wonderful...

To the cave castle of the wild knight Heinz vom Stein Above a vertical conglomerate cliff near the Traun river, one of the most mysterious castles far and wide towers: Stein Castle with its eerie catacombs and underground secret passages. This is said to have once been ruled by the (historically not really proven) wild robber knight Heinz vom Stein, about whom you can hear wild stories during a guided tour of the rock castle. On the hike presented here, you will get to know the charming surroundings with Altenmarkt, the Traun valley, and Baumburg Monastery.

A long but very varied hike through the historic border region of the Rupertiwinkel and along the Traun River, from the Höhlenburg in Stein to Pertenstein Castle.> From the parking lot across from the Martini Brewery Inn in Stein an der Traun 01, we can take a short walk to visit the Hochschloss at the beginning or end of the hike. However, the interior of the famous Höhlenburg can only be visited as part of a guided tour. We start from the parking lot and turn right, walking a few meters along the sidewalk next to Pallinger Straße, then turn sharply right immediately after the fish pond onto an unpaved farm road (toward the fish farm). Passing additional fish ponds, we hike straight through a beautiful tree-lined avenue to the visible Nepomuk Chapel 02, a Baroque gem.At the chapel, we keep to the left and follow a narrow, ascending path across open meadowland to the houses of Anning 03; the mountain panorama is fantastic. We cross the main road in Anning and follow the signs to Gigling. The small road, which is paved at first, ends after a sharp left turn; here we cross the historic state border between Rupertiwinkel and Chiemgau and ascend gently along the forest trail, initially through the woods. At the top of the hill, we emerge into open terrain again (with a magnificent view of the mountains) and reach Gigling 04; from here on, the path is paved again. We follow the small road through Gigling toward the forest, turn off at a right-hand hairpin bend just before the forest, and hike toward Mais 05. At the next intersection, we turn sharply right and follow the signs to Traunreut. The scenic paved road brings us back to the edge of the forest. We continue straight ahead, pass the turnoff to Steineck/Hochreit, and finally walk down a steeper slope, past a cement plant, to St 2104 06. We cross the road; the path goes slightly uphill, and the paved surface ends. The farm road takes us to Weisbrunn 07. First turning right, then left, we follow the signs for Truchtlachting/Hörpolding and walk downhill on asphalt toward the highway and the railroad tracks. We cross both and walk across open terrain to the signposted Poschmühle 08. Keeping to the right, we cross the Steiner Mühlbach and, a short while later, the Traun on a covered wooden bridge. After the bridge, we follow the paved Mühlweg to the left, past a sawmill and along a small canal that runs alongside us on the left. Near some houses, we cross the stream; the asphalt turns into a gravel path, and we walk first through the forest, then across open meadowland along the nearby bank of the Traun.Between the Traun and the canal, we go around an industrial site, come back to the paved road, and follow the small road toward Pertenstein Castle. At the fork by the covered Traun Bridge 09, we keep to the right and proceed along the ascending Schlossstraße, past the Walzmühle, to the parking lot, where a massive outdoor bell stands. A few meters downhill, you’ll reach the Schlosscafé, offering a magnificent view of the imposing Pertenstein Castle 10.Back at the fork, we turn right over the bridge 09 and take a short detour along the road up to the Rosary Chapel 11, located just under 100 m away. Back on the path, we turn right and follow the paved road toward the sports field. Passing the tennis courts, we follow the nature trail into the forest and down to the banks of the Traun. The narrow, partly root-covered riverside path—which is somewhat difficult to walk on for the first 20 minutes due to fallen trees—takes us to a weir 12; there, we cross the channeled Steiner Mühlbach. After a few cautious meters on the narrow but safe dam wall, we reach a forest trail again, which we follow along the canal. Soon, a small chapel can be seen on the right above the Mühlbach, and ahead of us lies the Poschmühle 08.If you’d like to avoid climbing over the trees blocking the path, keep to the right after the sports restaurant at the end of the soccer field and ascend a narrow, steep trail to the houses of Hörzing; at the top, turn left and leave the village on the small paved road toward the forest. A wide gravel path then leads into the forest and slightly downhill. We pass the wastewater treatment plant, reach paved road again, and continue hiking uphill until we turn left onto the Traunreut City Loop Trail at a house. This nature trail eventually brings us back to a small paved road, which we follow downhill to the left. Passing a chapel, we reach the Poschmühle 08 shortly thereafter. On the way there, we stay on this path until the left turn toward St. Georgen 13. We cross the town on the small paved road, follow Austraße across the railroad tracks, and continue to the county road. Keep left and cross the tracks again, then cross the B 304 and the Steiner Mühlbach. On Irsinger Straße, we walk between the houses, cross the Traun River 14, and follow the increasingly steep little road up to the church in Irsing 15.Passing the church on the right, we leave the paved road and hike, on a gentle incline, across open terrain toward the forest. At the next fork, we keep to the right, re-enter the forest, and follow the wide forest trail, eventually emerging into open terrain again toward some buildings (Dieplinger Leite). In front of the small Dieplinger Chapel 16, we turn right, using the visible Stein Castle as our landmark, and follow a narrow, unmarked meadow path. We come to a trail that leads quite steeply down the slope. At the bottom, we turn right onto a wider, unpaved path that takes us across the railroad tracks to the B 304. We cross the Traun Bridge to the right and pass through an underpass to reach the main street, then walk past the entrance to the Schloss Stein boarding school back to Stein an der Traun 08.
