Bad weather, no option for the mountains? No problem, then we do something in the Emmental. Simple tour of decent length with a worthwhile castle visit towards the end of the tour. Typical Emmental terrain with some hills.

On a pleasurable hike through the Emmental hill landscape, you will discover the wonderful scenery, taste regional beers, and enjoy matching Emmental delicacies along the way in the local gastronomy establishments. On the beer hike divided into two stages (8.5 km, 2 hours 20 minutes pure walking time) starting in Sumiswald, you will explore the scenic hills of the Emmental, Trachselwald Castle, and after a short train ride, the old town of Burgdorf with a detour to Burgdorf Castle. The route ends by descending along the Emme River to the Schützenhaus, home of Burgdorf beer. For the entire beer hike from Sumiswald to Burgdorf, we recommend planning about six hours. This excursion is ideal to experience the Emmental from its indulgent side with friends, clubs, or teams and to have a great time. You must book a starting time for the Emmental Beer Trail in advance, including the details of all participants.

Extensive hike over the ridges around the former Dürrgraben. In honor of the teacher and writer Simon Gfeller, this community name was renamed Heimisbach in 1968 (title of Gfeller's first work). Noteworthy along the way: village and castle Trachselwald, the many magnificent viewpoints, the hospitality at Lüderenalp, and the hamlet Ried with its remarkable rural building stock. Sections on hard surface.

Two-day circular hike to the Napf, the “Rigi of the Emmental”. The magnificent lookout mountain can only be reached on foot! The section from Lüderenalp to Napf is considered the most varied high-altitude hike in the Napf area. The descent from Napf to Ahorn follows the Napfbergland border trail. The subsequent hike over the heights north of the Hornbachgraben offers once again excellent views of the diverse hilly landscape of the Emmental. Good footwear recommended.

In the Footsteps of Jeremias GotthelfEmmental without Gotthelf would be like Weimar without Goethe or Stratford-upon-Avon without Shakespeare. Emmental is Gotthelf country. The epicenter is the village of Lützelflüh on the Emme, where Albert Bitzius, born in Murten on October 4, 1797, worked from January 1, 1831, until his death on October 22, 1854, as a pastor, school inspector, caretaker of the poor, and social reformer. And as a writer: in 1836 his first novel "Der Bauernspiegel" was published. The name of the main character, Jeremias Gotthelf, became his own. Here the vast literary oeuvre was created with titles like "Die Wassernot im Emmental", "Anne Bäbi Jowäger", "Käserei in der Vehfreude" or "Wie Joggeli eine Frau suchte". We begin our hike in Sumiswald, where "Die Schwarze Spinne" takes place and where the Gotthelf market is held each summer. We end it at the new Gotthelf Center in Lützelflüh. In the village, we find this passage from a Gotthelf letter: "I walk on foot and do not envy English and French writers who ride in two- and four-horse carriages."

Nice moderate loop through forest, along paved road, and with views of the alps. When we walked it today with two dogs, there was also a lot of logging activity that made the path extremely muddy.
