Norway’s Mountain with the Most Spectacular ViewGausta, as Gaustatoppen is also known for short, is Telemark’s highest mountain and the peak with the most expansive view in Norway. Since the Romantic era, poets and painters have hailed it as the country’s most beautiful mountain. The northern flank of the quartzite cone rises more than 1,500 m above the town of Rjukan in the Vestfjorddalen valley, which separates it from the Hardangervidda. From the southern part of the Hardangervidda, the Gausta appears well into the calendar summer as a snow-capped cone that towers 1,000 m above the Vidda.

Mountain hike in BlefjellThe scenic Bletoppen is the highest peak of Blefjell, the mountain ridge between the Numedal Valley in Buskerud and Lake Tinnsjø in Telemark. The coniferous forest exceeds the 1000-m mark in some places and often forms the forest boundary instead of birch; above this, a nearly surreal white landscape of rocks and boulders rises. The area through which the hiking trail runs is also called Store-Ble; it is part of the Blefjell wild reindeer protected area. In 1970, a mandatory hunting license was introduced in Blefjell, which led to hunting not being carried out for several years. As a result, the wild reindeer population in Blefjell increased to around 300 animals by the late 1980s; today their number is about half that.

Gaustatoppen is the highest mountain in southern Norway and from here, in good weather, you have a panoramic view of 16% of Norway's area. Hidden inside the mountain is a funicular railway that was still secret until 1995 and was only used for military purposes.

A Hidden Gem in the Shadow of Its Famous BrotherWhile the stream of hikers heading to the famous Gaustatoppen rarely lets up, the trail to Toreskyrkja is almost deserted—despite its immediate proximity to Gaustatoppen. The varied trail winds past lakes and small waterfalls, taking you through enchanting wildlife, and offers a breathtaking view of Gaustatoppen.
