At the foot of the city of Narni, approaching the Nera river near Narni Scalo, you reach the remains of the Augusto Bridge, a Roman-era bridge used in ancient times to cross the gorge of the Nera river, which originally connected two mountains. Commissioned by Augustus in 27 BC to restore the ancient Via Flaminia, from here begins the cycling and pedestrian path along the Nera River, which leads to the Mole di Narni (CLOSED) and the small village of Stifone. We preferred to park at the Suffragio parking lot, then visit the village of Narni at the end of the trek, but you can also park at the Augusto Bridge.

The small village of Stifone, the natural waterfalls, the ancient Roman port, and the turquoise waters rich in copper salts make this stretch one of the most evocative of the Nera Gorges.

From San Liberatore to the panoramic balcony of PennarossaIt takes some distance to appreciate the true greatness of a mountain. It's much the same with waterfalls. The hike starting from San Liberatore offers a wonderful panoramic view of the Marmore waterfalls. It has the advantage that it is far less crowded - and there is no entrance fee.

Waterfalls like from a picture bookThe Marmore Waterfalls are a natural spectacle on demand. When the diverted wild Velino stream is allowed to flow freely, it plunges a total of 165 m down three cascades. However, by pressing a button, the water masses are diverted for most of the day for electricity generation. Certainly the most frequented short hike in Umbria – during the high season, the stairway path can sometimes get a bit crowded.

Ascent on a forgotten path to a medieval castle ruin over picturesque lake landscapeThe arms of the second largest Umbrian lake picturesquely embrace the wooded hilltops of Piediluco. From the former fishing village with a lovely lakeside promenade, a beautiful forest path with switchbacks leads up to the castle ruins on Monte Luco. After the hike, a boat trip on the calm waters is recommended.

Through the Hinterland of the ValnerinaThe two mountain fortresses near Ferentillo serve as the gateway to the Valnerina. Opposite the distinctive tower, in the district of Precetto, the tour leads behind the hills accompanying the valley and offers insight into secluded side valleys. Through forests and olive groves, it goes around Monte Sant’Angelo to the remains of a ruined village.

Through dreamy villages to a Romanesque Benedictine abbeyThe peaceful round introduces you to the beautiful Nera valley. Poplars, black alders, and willows line the floodplain, mountain hamlets and sturdy castles nestle against steep slopes. On mule tracks, we hike through the abandoned ghost villages of Gabbio and Umbriano. The highlight of the route is the San Pietro in Valle monastery with its Romanesque bell tower, fresco paintings, and beautiful cloister.

Very beautiful route, well marked, mostly with a white bike lane and offering two or three gems near Stifone and at the end in the area of the plant in Nera Montoro. The only slightly more difficult part comes after Stifone, a decent climb but short. The route is very sunny, in spring/summer hats, sunscreen and plenty of water are needed.
