If you’re traveling from Germany, you can take the train to Meersburg or Friedrichshafen and then enjoy a leisurely boat ride from either of these port towns to Konstanz before continuing on to northern Italy. If your feet do get tired on the first day of hiking, it’s a good idea to take a boat from Romanshorn to Arbon, since the final stretch of the trail runs away from the shore. ▶ On the town side of Train Station 01, we keep to the right, cross the tracks, and walk past the Council Building (once a warehouse, later the site of the Council of Constance in 1417, which featured the only papal election on German soil) to the Stadtgarten. There, we turn right toward the water and then left toward the bandstand. There, a metal plaque on the lake side of the building commemorates the official opening of the E5 in 1972. (Anyone who arrived by boat should keep to the right along the shore and walk along Hafenstraße to the Stadtgarten.)The official starting signal has been given, and we now turn back toward the harbor with the statue of Imperia and follow the yellow signposts toward Romanshorn (19.5 km). This brings us to the Kreuzlingen harbor, where we follow the signs for “Seeburg” and “Seemuseum” into the beautiful Seeburgpark 02, with its old grove of plane trees and poplars.Seeburg (now a museum), tucked away among giant sequoias, was once the summer residence of the abbots of Kreuzlingen. We pass the marina, which offers a lovely view back toward Konstanz. The “Bottighofen” sign now points toward the Fischerhuus restaurant. The next stops along the lakeshore are the Fischerhuus campground and the Kreuzlingen swimming pool. Soon after, we reach the harbor of Bottighofen. Passing the Bottighofen train station, we hike through the park of the Münsterlingen Psychiatric Clinic and finally reach a campground and the marina at Altnau-Ruederbomm 03. The lakeside path then takes us via Zollerhus and Mosburg to another swimming spot (Kesswil); shortly afterward, we arrive in Kesswil 04. Further along the route to Uttwil, a row of charming beach huts standing on stilts offers some great photo opportunities. After Uttwil 05, with its beautiful half-timbered houses, the Lake Path and the Lake Constance Bike Path run together to the left of the railroad tracks, as private properties here extend all the way to the water’s edge. Passing the lake water treatment plant, the Holzensteiner Badi, and the Romanshorn outdoor pool, we finally reach the harbor and the lake park in Romanshorn. A promenade leads us to the harbor and Romanshorn 06 train station. The city is the largest Swiss port on Lake Constance; among the harbor’s landmarks are the whimsical dandelion water features at the entrance to the Friedrichshafen car ferry. Signposts to Arbon guide us out of town and back onto the “Seeweg.” We reach the village of Egnach and, after the train station, must turn left and walk along the tracks past extensive fruit orchards. This brings us finally to the Arbon 07 beach. Shortly after the Arbon-Seemoosriet train station, this somewhat monotonous stretch comes to an end. The trail branches off to the left into the Seepark and leads us past the Arbon swimming pool to the harbor and on to our destination for the day, the Arbon 08 train station.
