There are several beautiful hiking tours in Sonnenstein that are suitable for both experienced hikers and families with children. One popular route leads through the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park. Here you can hike along the Werra River and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The trails are well signposted and offer variety between forest passages and open fields.

Another interesting option is the circular hiking trail around the district of Steinbach. This tour leads past historic half-timbered houses and small chapels, where you can gain an insight into the traditional architecture of the region. Along the way, you will come across cosy benches or picnic areas where you can relax.

An excursion to Hanstein Castle is also highly recommended. This imposing structure towers high above the valley of the Werra and offers not only an exciting history but also a magnificent panoramic view over the Eichsfeld.

The best seasons for hiking in Sonnenstein are spring and autumn. In these months, nature shines in its full splendour and temperatures are pleasantly mild. In spring, numerous flowers bloom and in autumn the leaves of the trees change colour, creating a particularly impressive atmosphere.

Although Sonnenstein itself is rather small, there are nevertheless many places in the surrounding area where you can go hiking. In addition to the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park, the Hainich National Park and the Rhön Biosphere Reserve also offer wonderful opportunities for hiking.
