Ridge hike on a gentle mountain rangeIn terms of panoramic views, this tour can certainly compete with the one on Castro Valnera. However, the flat summit of Pico Pizarras can be reached with much less effort. From Portillo de Lunada, where the cows and semi-wild horses that graze on the mountain meadows like to stop by, good paths lead us along a long mountain ridge. There are only very moderate climbs to contend with and we also take in the summit of Pico Veinte on the way there. Views open up over the Castro Valnera massif, the deep valley of the Río Miera and the glacier and karst landscape in the heart of the Parque Natural Collados del Asón. The area is home to the largest continuous system of karst caves and underground rivers in Cantabria, which is one of the largest in Europe, stretching over 150 kilometers and 600 meters deep.

In the Footsteps of Ancient Glaciers in the Collados del Asón Natural ParkA beautiful, varied, and extensive loop hike that takes us right into the heart of the nature reserve. It is dotted with fascinating landforms resulting from glaciation and karstification. In the first section, we hike through the high valley of Bustalveinte, featuring glacial striations and terminal moraines from the Ice Age, as well as the Brenavinto polje. This is a wide, flat depression formed by the dissolution of limestone. It is filled with substrate and has no surface drainage; instead, it is crisscrossed by natural channels and gullies through which the water disappears underground. The trail leads uphill through mountain forest to a scenic saddle before winding its way down between enormous sinkholes and over rugged rocky ledges into the valley of the Hondojón side glacier. Here we see old high-altitude pastures with typical cabañas and complete the loop on a trail that once again offers spectacular views.

Valley hike to the spectacular birthplace of the Río AsónThe Parque Natural de los Collados del Asón is one of the highlights of Cantabrian natural treasures. It is located in a wild mountain environment made up of rugged, karstified limestone and shaped by glaciers during the last Ice Ages. Original beech forests, deep valleys, and high peaks characterize this sparsely populated area. At the end of the valley where our hike leads, the Río Asón springs forth. The water plunges about 70 meters down the vertical to overhanging rock walls. We hike from the tiny settlement of Asón on a rocky path along the wild stream through ancient beeches to the waterfall and up to the mountain pass road, from where we enjoy a magnificent view. The road winds spectacularly up to the Collado del Asón, and the drive past several viewpoints alone is an experience.

Along imposing rock faces and cavesThe area around Ramales de la Victoria is well-known and popular with climbers and via ferratas. Not without reason, as the Río Gándara has cut deep into the mountains here, creating gorges and impressive vertical rockfalls. There are also numerous caves in the limestone, including one of the most famous in Cantabria, the Cueva de Covalanas (or Cueva de El Mirón). In 2010, an 18,700-year-old skeleton of a female Cro-Magnon man was also discovered here. The body of the woman buried in the cave had been decorated with red pigment. The name of the circular hiking trail is based on this "red woman". It allows us to enjoy the impressive landscape even without climbing. The tour first takes us through dense, shady forest up to just before the summit of Peña El Pando. We then descend below the Pico El Moro into the valley, where we pass the huge La Pared rock face and have wonderful views of the gorge from the Mirador de Covalanas.

A rocky ridge amid magnificent karst landscapeBetween the Valle de Ruesga in the north and the Valle de Soba in the south, the Sierra del Hornijo stretches east-west. The small mountain range is covered with a variety of impressive karst formations. Above the remote villages of the Soba valley, this relatively short but challenging mountain tour takes us to the rock ridge of Hornijo. It is lined with deep funnels of huge sinkholes that here plunge abruptly into the abyss. The ridge crossing is short and demanding but offers fantastic views to the coast, the rugged rock landscape, and the idyllic high valley. Those who want to push themselves further and are confident climbers can also take the peak of Mazo Chico.
