Hike to the Ship Mill and the “” Roll Ferry In addition to its many natural beauties, this hike along the Mur River offers two attractions. In Mureck, a replica of the last ship mill on Styrian soil floats on the river. In Weitersfeld, the very last roll ferry across the Mur is still in operation. This cross-border ferry is what makes this loop hike possible in the first place. If the ferry lands in Slovenia, just ring the bell and cross the Mur for free! The trail continues through Sladki vrh (Süßenberg) and back to Mureck, staying close to the river and gaining only a few meters in elevation.

Old Borders, New ExperiencesFrom the Slovenian border town of Šentilj (St. Ilgen), it’s just a few hundred meters to the border. After the end of World War I, the Treaty of Saint-Germain in 1919 established the new border, the course of which is clearly marked by white boundary stones. Relations between the two countries had already been strengthening even before Slovenia’s independence in 1991, but the distinctive border fence was erected in 2015 in the wake of the refugee crisis. Yet even this barrier comes to an end, and so, during this hike, you can easily cross into the neighboring country through open gates.
