Three-day tour on the edge of the Upper Palatinate JuraThe appearance of witness mountains along the Franconian Alb is not unusual, but near Neumarkt several of them are grouped around the old Palatinate town. They were separated from the Alb ridge by erosion and thus bear witness to the fact that the Jura layers once extended further to the west. Since 2007, the Zeugenbergrunde quality hiking trail has linked the Albtrauf in the east of the city with a number of selected witness mountains in the foothills. The circular trail, which can be completed in three one-day stages, offers fantastic views and leads through the magnificent Jura landscape around Neumarkt with constant ups and downs. There is plenty to see along the way - including Celtic ramparts on the Buchberg, ruins of once proud castles and a pilgrimage church in Baroque splendor. And there are plenty of cozy inns along the route and in Neumarkt, which is known for its variety of beers.

There are some discussions here about how long the Zeugenberg route around Neumarkt actually is. We did it in 2009 as a 2-day route, although we skipped a part east of Neumarkt.
Overnight stay halfway in Postbauer-Heng.

> On Day 1, we start at St. Josef Monastery 01 and follow the "Blau5" trail up to the Mariahilf Pilgrimage Church 02, which offers a beautiful view of Neumarkt. From the Mariengrotte, we turn right and continue on the Zeugenbergrunde trail (“red line on yellow”). We pass through Lähr 03 and enter the pine forest. On the other side of St. 2660, we enter the Neumarkt Sand Dunes Nature Reserve, and with a little imagination, we can actually make out flat dunes in the gentle undulations of the terrain. Following the railroad tracks to the left, we finally cross to the other side and walk through the forest to the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal. We continue straight ahead to the left. At the Ölkuchenmühle, we switch sides 04 and, after passing NM 18, skirt the village of Buchberg. We cross the hill of the same name and discover old limestone quarries there, as well as the rampart at the Zangentor 05 of the old fortification. We cross State Route 2238 and arrive at Staufer Berg. There, you can still make out the ramparts of the former castle. We descend the mountain and follow the “Grün6” trail marker to our lodging in Berngau. On the second day, we leave Berngau 07 via the “Grün6” trail. Back on the Zeugenbergrunde trail, we follow it to the left toward the forest. Via the Hohe Ahnt, we reach Tyrolsberg 08 and then hike over the Tyrolsberg and the Großberg. We cross the railroad tracks and enter a large forested area. First, we climb up to the Grünberg and, at the top, keep right at the intersection 09. Following the B 8, we continue through the vast forest and, over the ridge, finally reach the Schlossberg Heinzburg 10. However, only the rampart and moat remain of the castle. Following the forest trail and our trail markers, we arrive back at the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal and leave the Zeugenbergrunde trail by turning left. The “Red Dot” leads us to Berg bei Neumarkt 11, where we’ll stay for the night. On Day 3, the “Red Dot” takes us back to the Zeugenbergrunde, and we carefully cross State Route 2240 toward Loderbach 12 and, a little later, State Route 299a as well. After going around an industrial site, we now reach State Route 299. We follow the road on the other side, passing the Friedl and Bodenmühle mills. On the way across the fields toward Labersricht 13, we can already make out our next destination: the Wolfstein ruins on the wooded ridge. So we climb the Wolfsteinberg along a path that grows steeper and then take a sharp right turn. On the treeless plateau, the imposing Wolfstein Castle ruins 14 suddenly lie right in front of us. Don’t miss the detour to the castle and its spectacular view. And from the nearby Krähentisch, an incomparable panorama unfolds as well. Finally, we head downhill through a juniper heath and cross the NM 4. Soon we reach Höhenberg 15 and, a little later, the Mariahilf pilgrimage church 02. The “Blue 5” trail marker then leads us back to St. Josef Monastery 01.

Scenic, very quiet hike through the little-known landscape in the northeast of Freystadt, where the exemplary ecological restoration of the once straightened Sulz can be seen. Especially beautiful during the blooming of the meadow flowers, usable all year round.
