Closest to the sea – only 45 km to the AdriaticThe Italians count Monte Mataiur (Slovene: Matajur) among the Julian Prealps (Prealpi Giulie). It is the last high mountain towards the southwest, towards the Friulian plain, a mighty ridge rising over vast forests and barren alpine meadows. As an outstanding lookout mountain, it offers a great view of the Julian Alps, especially to Krn (Monte Nero), and to the Adriatic.

From Livek via Avsa A visit to our Italian neighbors The Italian-Slovenian border runs across Matajur, and we hike along the summit ridge on Italian soil. On clear days, the view from the summit stretches from the Julian Alps in the north, across the Dolomites in the west, to the Adriatic Sea and the Friuli Plain in the south. During the Mountain War of 1915–17, the Matajur was fiercely contested; in the 12th Battle of the Isonzo, the Austrians, led by Prussian Lieutenant Colonel Erwin Rommel, captured the summit. An old military trail on the Italian side of the mountain is still called the “Rommel Trail” today, and a peace chapel as well as a memorial at the summit commemorate the fallen. On the Italian side, the Rifugio Pelizzo is situated on a hillside with a panoramic view; with a slightly longer detour, we can stop there for a spaghetti break.
