Savignone, the center of the upper Valle Scrivia, lies at the foot of Monte Pianetto. The mountain range stretches like an armchair all the way to Monte Maggio, shielding the town from cold northern winds. In the Middle Ages, Savignone was part of the Fieschi domain; in the 19th century, when distinguished Genoese families began spending their vacations here, tourism began to develop.A first highlight of the hike is the Castello dei Fieschi, perched on a conglomerate rock above Savignone, already within the Antola Nature Park. The steep climb from the castle to the saddle is well worth the effort; the subsequent stretch along the forested ridge of the mountain range and the scenic outcrops is absolutely beautiful.> In the central piazza in Savignone01 —which features a bus stop, a bar, and parking—there are several historic buildings, such as the Palazzo della Meridiana, the old hospital, the Palazzo Fieschi, and the Church of San Pietro. From the piazza, walk back a short distance along the road and turn left onto the narrow Via Broglio, heading uphill. At the intersection, follow the signs; a trail with several steps leads you up to the Castello dei Fieschi02, the castle ruins with their characteristic round tower perched on the conglomerate rocks—Info Tour 33.The trail continues straight ahead to the right in front of the Castello, alternating between rocky terrain and forest as it climbs very steeply to the saddle03 between Monte Pianetto—with its steep conglomerate cliffs—and the forested Monte Brughea. Now comes a particularly beautiful section: with gentle ups and downs, the trail winds in a semicircle along the ridge or through the slope just below it, winding through chestnut forests across the mountain ranges surrounding Savignone. Centuries ago, chestnut trees were planted here; they were considered the “bread of the poor” and were an important staple food for the rural population. The trail leads over Monte Brughea and then twice across exposed conglomerate rock formations, offering a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains. Following the slope below Monte Moro, you’ll reach the first junction (04 ) leading down to Savignone in about 30 minutes. Here, continue straight ahead and turn right after 100 m, following the sign for Monte Maggio, marked with two yellow diamonds. The beautiful trail continues along the ridge, then passes along the slope below Monte Suia and turns south. After another 30 minutes, you’ll reach a ridge and then turn right at the fork05; the yellow-marked trail continues straight ahead. Now the descent begins; there are several trails, but stay on the main trail: first, a short descent, then across two dry ravines, and at the fork that follows, turn right and head downhill. The trail soon widens and leads straight down through the forest; at a fork, turn right toward Savignone. After a long, sometimes steep descent, you’ll reach the road near the cemetery; turn right here and head back to the piazza in Savignone01.
