Einer der schönsten Wanderwege Deutschlands ist der im Herzen Deutschlands gelegene 263 km lange „Eichsfeld Wanderweg“, der nach der Grenzöffnung 1989 angelegt wurde und durch das gesamte Eichsfeld führt. Als Wanderkarten werden die Topografischen Karten 1 : 50.000 „Nördliches Eichsfeld“ mit Goldener Mark, Ohmgebirge, Zehnsberg und Dün und „Südliches Eichsfeld Hainich Werratal“ vom Thüringer Landesvermessungsamt empfohlen. Das Markierungszeichen des „Eichsfeld Wanderweg“ ist ein sechsspeichiges rotes Rad auf weißem Grund (Eichsfeldrad). Vorbild für das Eichsfeldrad war im Hinblick auf die historische Entwicklung des Eichsfeldes und die lange Zugehörigkeit des Eichsfeldes zum Bistum Mainz das Mainzer Rad. Es ist eine gemeine Figur in der Heraldik der Stadt Mainz in Rheinland-Pfalz. Parkmöglichkeiten sind bei allen Etappenorten vorhanden.
