Stage Alsace: Wissembourg - Weiler/Langenberg - Climbach - Scherholpass - Rott - Altenstadt - Wissembourg In Wissembourg stands the former Gothic Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter and Paul with a Romanesque chapel extension. Continuing towards Weiler, you reach the pilgrimage chapel Maria G`hör. Following the Lauterbach valley, you arrive at the Climbach hermitage. The ruin consists only of a chapel arch, and the Climbronn spring at the foot of the hermitage is said to have healing powers. Next, you climb the Scherhol pass, passing the Vogesenclub shelter on the way to Rott, with its simultaneous church. The stage now takes you through vineyards to the Geisberg. Here stood the Geisberg castle residence, built in the 18th century and completely destroyed in World War II. Afterwards, in 1972, the Mennonite community built a chapel after working at the castle. Descending the Geisberg, you pass the French war memorial and enjoy the view over the Lauter valley, Wissembourg, and the Wasgau. In Altenstadt stands the purely Romanesque church of St. Ulrich, which was a Benedictine abbey. The last part of the stage leads you past the train station back to the historic old town of Wissembourg. In the vicinity of the Church of St. Peter and Paul is the Protestant Church of St. Johann, where Martin Bucer preached the Reformation. There stands the impressive cross, the symbol of the chapel pilgrimage route.

From the old town of Wissembourg, you follow the Lauter for a short distance and then slowly but steadily go uphill out of the town. At first, the hiking tour still runs along fields. After about halfway up, it continues through the forest. While still in the forest, you reach the highest point of the hike, the Scherhol. The Col de Pigeonnier is already almost 50 meters lower.   After the Col de Pigeonnier, you walk through the fields and vineyards to Steinseltz and from there back to Wissembourg.

From the Bustle to SolitudeAnyone crossing the border from the German Wine Gate at Schweigen-Rechtenbach to Wissembourg by car or on foot suddenly finds themselves in a completely different world. This has long since become well known, and the incredibly picturesque small town, with the second-largest Gothic church building in Alsace after Strasbourg Cathedral and many other historic buildings, some dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, especially attracts countless visitors from near and far on weekends. If the town becomes too bustling, the suggested forest hike is recommended – a path without spectacular highlights, but also a way into solitude, which is felt to be particularly restful here.
