A tent route through the diverse landscape of Femundsmarka National Park. In 5 - 6 day stages, you travel through an area that on the one hand is typically East Norwegian, with extensive coniferous forests and gently rounded mountains and hills, and on the other hand is distinctly shaped by the last Ice Age, which has left clearly visible traces here everywhere. It gives the impression as if the kilometers-thick ice cover has just recently retreated.

World Heritage and Copper MiningNorthwest of Femunden lies Norway's most famous mining town – the World Heritage site Røros. After copper ore was discovered in the region in the 17th century, an over 300-year era of intensive mining, smelting, and deforestation began. A handful of forest farmers were joined by miners from all over Europe. Various trades, farmers, and institutions helped Røros develop into a typical mining town with 2,000 inhabitants, which received electric power in 1897 as the third town in Europe. In 1977, the Røros Copper Works ceased its operations after 333 years. With its authentic wooden buildings, the church, remains of mining activities such as the widely visible slag heap, and the visitor mine Olavsgruva located east of the town, Røros has since captivated many visitors.

Copper ore mining began in Røros in 1644. This makes it Norway’s oldest mine, alongside the historic mining town of Kongsberg. Shortly thereafter, in 1646, the town was founded. Since Norway had no prior experience in mining, miners were recruited from all over Europe. As a result, the town developed into one of the country’s most important mining towns. Its historic wooden buildings—some colorfully painted, others blackened—date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Another major attraction is the whitewashed Røros Church, built in 1784. It is one of Norway’s largest churches and towers above all the buildings in Røros’s old town. Copper ore was mined in the pits until 1977, giving the town a 333-year mining tradition. Even today, the residents of the mountain village of Røros live and work in the oldest wooden houses in Europe. Due to its cultural and historical value, the town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980. This circular hike takes you through a living museum that embodies centuries of history. On this circular hike, you’ll pass through a unique open-air museum.> Starting at theRøros parking lot by the train station, cross the main street and turn onto the road, passing the Bergstadens Hotel on your right. At the next opportunity, in front of the Aktiv building, turn right onto the side street. After a left-hand curve, the historic 02Bergmannsgata begins, lined with numerous quaint wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. In front of the pharmacy, we turn right onto Rau-Veta, cross the Hyttelva stream, and at the fork, take the path slightly to the left that leads slightly uphill. Then we turn left onto 03 Sleggveien (Slag Road), where there are more historic wooden houses and a museum. From there, we reach the slag heaps. The slag is a byproduct of copper smelting and was piled up to form the massive 04Slegghaugan. We can climb this slag heap to reach a lookout point. We leave the lookout point heading west—toward the church tower—cross the stream once more, and arrive at 05 Kurantgården, built in 1820. The complex consisted of a blacksmith’s shop, a carpenter’s shop, a wheelwright’s workshop, a belt-maker’s workshop, an office, an iron warehouse, and a workhouse. Hours of operation are 8:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. on weekdays. North of it lies the 06 Rørosmuseet Smelthytta (open daily from 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.). The exhibition features models of mines, smelting houses, and technical facilities that were once in use. It also explains the history of mining. With the museum behind us, we walk cross-country across the parking lot and reach Mørkstugat Street, where the so-called 07 Hyttklokka is located. This is a bell that signaled the start and end of the workday for the workers in the smelter. Right next to the bell, we turn right off the street onto a path that leads past the old wooden houses. We reach a street that we follow briefly to the left, arriving at 08Røros Church after a few meters. The church is opened upon request, but generally only for groups and not for individuals. We continue strolling along Kjerkgat through the traffic-calmed zone with its many shops, such as the 09Boghandel, which seems frozen in time. If you’re hungry, check out 10 Restaurant 1897, which is open Monday through Saturday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Otherwise, head back to the parking lot.
