Dolines with Sea View The 360-degree panoramic view including the sea is reason enough to climb Monte Coccovello. The entire summit area is dotted with dolines. When water dissolves limestone underground, cavities form. When their roof collapses, craters, called dolines, are created. The dolines of Monte Coccovello are relatively old, as the craters have been refilled with deposited material. What remain are round depressions, often with a pond in the middle. Until the 1940s, the dolines were used for small-scale vegetable and fodder cultivation. Along the trail, we first look north to the Gulf of Policastro and Monte Bulgheria in Cilento, then east to Lagonegro and Monte Sirino, further right in the distance the almost vertical west wall of Monte Alpi; to the southeast lies the pyramid of Monte La Spina, behind it the Pollino massif; some villages like Rivello, Nèmoli and Trècchina lie right at our feet; the Serra Pollino (not to be confused with Monte Pollino) can be seen at the chapel. To the south, we look along the Orsomarso range; to the southwest we see Maratea in the foreground with the Christ statue, the Isola di Dino, and with a bit of luck even the Lipari Islands far out at sea.
