Right from the start, the white town on the Skagerrak—or the “Pearl of the Riviera,” as Risør is also known—captivates visitors with its white patrician houses and elegant waterfront promenade. It is considered “the most picturesque town in southern Norway” and also enchants visitors with the “Church of the Holy Spirit,” built in 1647, one of the most magnificent churches in the kingdom. But as you explore further, the fantastic natural scenery—with its fairy-tale forests and magnificent viewpoints overlooking the picturesque coastal landscape—will captivate you. From the Fransåsen viewpoint, the view stretches almost boundlessly across the vast expanse of deep-green hills with their dense forests and the magnificent fjord landscape. A pure nature experience! > Starting from 01Fredsparken in Risør, at the large Tjenna parking lot in front of the Peace Park, we head straight ahead (in the direction of travel) through the enchanting “white town” with its magnificent, white-painted 19th-century wooden houses toward the harbor. A detour through the tranquil alleys between the houses is well worth it, as is the turn left up to the enchanting 17th-century Baroque church. At the harbor, we keep to the right and follow the waterfront promenade to the aquarium, then turn right and head up the stone steps to “Cannon Square” 02Kastellet. On Tangengate, we finally pass through the charming Tangen wooden-house district and reach the bay 03Flisvika, marked by the blue sign for the Coastal Trail, which we follow along a rocky path through the idyllic forest to the small sandy cove 04Østre Randvik. Here, turn right and head west along the forest of the “Randvik-Store Furuoya-Leikeroya” nature reserve to the Randvik parking lot, then continue past it to the picturesque swimming cove 05Vestre Randvik with its small natural sandy beach. Here, follow the “Fransåsen” signs up to the right and take the steep trail through the forest to the 06Oterlia settlement on Terneveien. Following the blue markings, the trail leads through beautiful woodland into 07Rullandsdalen and, through the small valley, over a short footbridge onto the idyllic forest path. Here, you’ll also find several viewpoints overlooking the enchanting bay with its small skerry islands just offshore. After a detour to the “panorama cabin” Dagsturhytta, with its fantastic view of the archipelago, the trail leads over the Stranddalsheia ridge to the path that runs from 08Amlandsveien down to the beach. Here, however, continue along the path through the forest, which passes by the deep-black swimming lake 09Amlandstjenn, adorned with white water lilies. The trail leads through the forest, soon climbing more steeply to a signposted junction, and in the final meters—with climbing irons and a rope safety line—to the rocky lookout hilltop 10Fransåsen. From here, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the seemingly endless hilly landscape with its deep-green forests, Lake Fransåsen, and the fjords along the coastline. The trail descends through the forest back to the junction, where you’ll follow the signs to the right toward Frydendal. At the gravel road at 11Amlandsveien, turn briefly right and then immediately left, following the signs into the forest toward Frydendal (blue trail markers). The beautiful forest path soon turns into a logging road, which eventually leads to 12Caspersens vei. After crossing the road, continue following the blue markings, first through the forest, then alongside the road to the church at 13Frydendal. Follow the road past the churchyard wall until you reach the fork, where you turn left downhill to the starting point at 01Fredsparken in Risør.
