Beautiful little hike. We made it more interesting with a detour to the ridge. Apparently, it can be crossed, but we lacked the equipment. Landscape is magnificent. Were able to see some vultures.

Pico Gilbo - An Elegant View Over the "Fjords of León"

Of course, calling Pico Gilbo the “Cervino Leonés”—or “Matterhorn of León”—is an exaggeration. Nevertheless, its elegant, slender silhouette makes every mountaineer’s heart beat faster. > From Hiking Parking Lot 1, a wide and easy trail along the shore leads us to a small side arm of the Embalse de Riaño. The branches and inlets that this large reservoir sends far into the mountains are quite rightly nicknamed the “Fiordos Leoneses,” or fjords of León.At the tapered end of one of these bays, we come across a marker post 2 with a yellow arrow and a scallop shell. Following the arrow, our clearly visible trail branches off to the left, leading us into the forest and up into the valley that runs parallel to the ridge of Pico Gilbo. We now climb nearly 250 meters in elevation on this forest trail, which is clearly marked and easy to follow. After this ascent, the forest thins out, and we come across another wooden marker post 3 in the open terrain. This time, however, we do not follow the arrow but keep to the right and come upon the path that leads us to a saddle to the right below Pico Gilbo. Along the way, we come across yellow stripes as markers. Over increasingly steep terrain, we reach the saddle 4 between the small hill Peña Sarnosa and Pico Gilbo. Here we turn left and follow the trail, which now ascends diagonally toward the summit. The trail follows a ledge on the flank to the right below the summit ridge. We soon reach a rock step about 2 meters high, where we’ll need to use our hands for support. After that, the trail continues on walkable terrain until we come to a rock face that drops sharply down to the right. Here, the trail turns left and upward, leading directly up to the summit ridge. We climb over rugged rock steps to reach the ridge and from there continue over steep terrain to the summit of Pico Gilbo 5. There, an incomparable view of the “fjords” and the unique, steep mountain landscape of Riaño awaits us. And a pair of old hiking boots, once left behind here weighted down with stones... We return via the same route.
