Heath and River HikeNear the Kleine Nete, the Kesselse Heath offers a journey back in time with a colorful landscape changing between heath, forest, and sandy areas – remnants of post-Ice Age dunes. The Kesselse Heath has a varied history – after modern slash-and-burn for agriculture around 1800 it was planted with conifers as raw material for mining. Before World War I, the trees had to give way for strategic reasons to allow a clear view between the forts of Kessel and Broechem. One tree remained standing to mark the border between Kessel and Nijlen. During World War II, trees newly planted by the Pouppez-de-Kettenis family were cut down again for firewood. Only that one tree stood again until it was also cut down in 1943. The current forest was replanted after World War II and the eastern part of the area was sold for the construction of a foam rubber factory to process rubber from the Congo. The Kesselse Heath, protected since 1976, is now maintained by about 50 sheep through grazing. The hike leads through this varied landscape as well as along the old riverbed of the Kleine Nete, which was largely canalized in 1952.

Forest hike with history near OelegemThe Antwerp anti-tank canal encircles the northern port city at a distance of about 10 kilometers northeast in a quarter circle. The 33-kilometer-long and 6-meter-wide water trench was created in 1937-39 to protect against German tanks. Originally, a 3-meter deep and 18-meter wide dry ditch was planned, but due to penetrating groundwater, the "wet" solution was chosen. The trench ran in a zigzag pattern of straight sections with gun positions at the corners. Bunkers secured locks that regulated the water level of the canal with its 13-meter height difference. In the meantime, the facility has developed into a large contiguous natural oasis, connecting several forests and natural areas and thereby promoting the exchange of plants and animals. This circular hike combines the well-preserved southern part including the fortress of Oelegem and the Vrieselhof estate with extensive woods between the towns of Oelegem and Halle.
