Hikes in Rabenstein

A pleasant short hike along the Plane river and to Rabenstein Castle

In the wooded hilly landscape of the High Fläming, several centuries of castle architecture can be admired at Rabenstein Castle.

The Fläming naturally forms the southern “collar” of the Berlin metropolis. The castle hiking trail, awarded the label “Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland,” winds its way for 147 km and in eight stages through the hilly and forest-rich landscape right through the Hoher Fläming Nature Park. Those who hike it in combination with the art hiking trail cover 117 km or 71 km. The art hiking trail itself is 41 km long. (More on this, see "Further Info") On this hike, only the castle hiking trail is shown on the map without the art hiking trail.

Following the mountain newt's trail, we hike through the protected Planetal, the Rädigke forest, and the Rabental nature reserve, passing by Rabenstein Castle.

In June 2021, the SRzG held its first walkshop "Walk for the Future – Climate" from Dessau to Berlin. One subproject was the establishment of a climate path between Dessau and Brück.

On the Alpine Newt Hiking Trail through the Planetal ValleyThis hiking trail in the High Fläming takes us through the habitat of one of Brandenburg's rarest amphibians. The highly endangered alpine newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris) is typically a resident of water-rich forested areas in the low mountain ranges and here lives at its northeasternmost distribution boundary. Only during the early spring mating season do the males display a blue back coloration; then, with some luck, one can spot the animal near the old swimming pool at Raben. The Planetal Valley has also been designated as a nature reserve to protect the alpine newt.

Who would have thought that hiking through the Fläming Nature Park in Saxony-Anhalt as well as the High Fläming Nature Park in Brandenburg could be so informative and educational? The Climate-Stelae Trail is not an ordinary hiking trail. The four granite stelae that make it up connect the physical dimension, the granite of the stelae, with the virtual dimension, the learning content behind them on the Internet. If you scan the QR codes on the stelae with your phone, you are redirected to the "Walk for the Future" website of the Foundation for Intergenerational Justice (SRzG) and gain access to various future letters. These letters each describe a positive and a negative scenario of climate change with its impact on the living conditions of future generations. The letters were written from the perspective of several ten-year-old Berlin children from the year 2070. They are addressed to today's population.

On the circular route below Rabenstein Castle, you go along the edge of the field and through the forest to Klein Marzehns and then back to the starting point through nature again. The tour can be easily combined with a visit to the castle.

From the castle, go downhill to the village of Raben, then continue to the Plane stream and now return in a curve back to the village, then through the forest and the last section via stairs back to the castle.

The long-distance hiking trail leads for about 50 kilometers through the Saalekreis in the Saale-Unstrut region.
