The Quiberon Peninsula is accessible only via an embankment of dunes about 100 meters wide. It is characterized by two contrasting landscapes. While the east coast is sheltered from the strong northwest winds, the west coast—the weather side—is exposed to strong winds and waves. Although the term “weather side” usually implies something negative, that is definitely not the case here. The west coast captivates visitors with a fascinating landscape featuring caves, the sea’s magnificent play of colors, rugged cliffs, a massive rock arch, and bays of fine, golden-yellow sand. On this tour, you can pause again and again to enjoy the enchanting natural surroundings.> After parking the car near the Kerhostin train station, we take the train to Quiberon01. From the station plaza, we cross the intersection, turn slightly left onto Rue de la Gare, and follow the signs for Gare Maritim. At the first fork in the road—where there’s a church on the left—you’ll find an impressive seafood shop with a huge selection just 20 meters further on the left. Otherwise, continue straight ahead on Rue de Verdun, a lively shopping street. Beyond the large square, it’s only a few meters to the town beach—which is smoothed out and cleaned every morning, just like a ski slope. We turn right and pass the Quiberon Harbor02 (13 m). We walk along the pier until we see Château Turpault, built in 1904, on the Pointe de Beg headland. It’s privately owned and can only be admired from the outside. The promenade ends, and we now follow a marked hiking trail until we reach the first breathtaking viewpoint, Cap Beg er Goalennec03 (8 m)—the view stretches almost endlessly to the north along the rugged coastline. Behind a small hut at the parking lot, the trail continues. On a wooden boardwalk, we pass a rather unattractive sandy cove. Shortly afterward, the trail ends; we turn left and rejoin the path. At a large rock, we reach the Grote de Kerniscop viewpoint and, shortly afterward, the first beautiful sandy cove, Port Guibello. Beyond a wooden bridge, followed by a short ascent, we reach the beautiful sandy beach of Port Goulom, with its winding and small hidden coves. But the next stop, Port Bara04 (8 m), is particularly beautiful with its huge, smoothly rounded rocks. Thanks to the Pointe du Percho, it is especially well protected from the usually very strong winds blowing from the northwest. Time and again, trails lead up to headlands offering scenic viewpoints. The route is always clear; it follows the coastline. One of the highlights of the hike is the rock arch at Port Blanc05 (12 m). We skip the subsequent turnoff to Pointe du Percho (only if you want to, of course); just before the headland, we veer right and now head east—along the northern tip of the headland. Just before a parking lot, we turn slightly to the left and continue directly along the coast again. Behind a long harbor wall in the village of Portivy, we pass two more restaurants. After leaving another parking lot behind us, the trail leads between the Atlantic Ocean and villas; in the distance, you can see the fortifications of Fort de Penthiévre06 (12 m). As soon as the path leads up a flight of stairs, we walk a few meters to the right to Avenue de Groix; at the fork in the road, we turn right onto Rue de Sombreuil, which leads directly to the Kerhostin07 train station.
