Lonely Paths to Great HeightsThe Muntanyes de Prades are closed to the north by a long mountain range, which, despite its constant height of around 1000 m, is made up of various rocks: conglomerate, sandstone, limestone, and at Mola d’Estat even granite. Fascinating rock formations rise from the vast forests: from Tossal de Baltasana and the Roques de Gríngol (Tour "Tossal de la Baltasana") through the Mola d’Estat and Mola de Roquerola described here to the rock balcony Mirador de la Pena (Tour "Monestir de Poblet – El Mirador de la Pena"). Our hike leads up old, established mule tracks to the cave village Mas de Roquerol, where once house after house nestled under the Balme, while nowadays sport climbers tackle the overhangs directly from the ruins. From the sensational summit plateau of the Mola d’Estat (also called Mola dels Quatre Termes because four municipal areas border each other on its ridge) we enjoy wide views before descending again beside massive granite towers. The conclusion is finally a slope hike on a solid mule track, perhaps complemented by a detour down to the Riu Brugent, which here runs so uniquely beautifully over the rocks.

Short hike to a magical hermitageThe Ermita de la Mare de Déu de l'Abellera - Our Lady of the Beehives - is located on a panoramic, narrow, rock-covered mountain terrace in red sandstone. Behind an entrance gate there is a forecourt, behind it the chapel and at the end the terrace is closed off by an apiary. Beautiful forest paths and old pilgrimage routes lead to this unique gem.

The classic from Prades: Variety and wide viewsPrades – the red town – which has given its name to the entire vast mountain range, is a historic and worth-seeing town with its walls and gates and the square Plaça Major. It is also known for its culinary delights (potatoes) and the Cava (sparkling wine), in honor of which the spherical main fountain Cava lets flow from its pipes every year at the big festival in July. On this tour, we hike through shady deciduous forests up to the highest peak of the Muntanyes de Prades, visiting strange rock formations and a comfortable inhabited cave at the height.
