On leisurely paths to seclusionIn the first part of today's stage, we still don't have to overcome any major altitude differences and hike relaxed along mostly flat paths and trails. The GR 10 leads us through intoxicatingly fragrant coniferous forests and further into the beautiful high valley of the Riberola. From the Cabane d’Aixeques, the steep ascent to Col Mitja, 2367 m, begins, promising a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape. Those who still have enough strength can additionally climb one of the two worthwhile peaks – Pic de Gallinas, 2624 m, or Pic Redoun, 2677 m. Finally, there is the descent to the Refuge du Ras de la Carança. In the simple, family-run hut managed by the mountain-associated hosts, we appreciate the warm dinner even more after the long stage and feel especially close to the mountains.

Descent from the Cerdagne Plateau Back to CivilizationFrom Lac des Bouillouses on the edge of the Cerdagne Plateau, this pleasant stage leads mostly downhill toward the Têt Valley. Along the way, we pass through small towns that offer a variety of places to stop for refreshments, lodging, and shopping. With energy replenished, today’s route also allows for short detours to sights located a bit off the beaten path. Railway enthusiasts won’t want to miss a ride on the famous Petit Train Jaune. Likewise, history buffs will surely be happy to take a detour to explore the citadel in Mont-Louis (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), designed by General Vauban.

This walk takes you up to the ridge, with excellent views of the whole valley. We had two issues with this hike: 1) There is no paved road to the starting point. We took pity on our saloon car and parked it at the end of the paved road, which added 3.8k each direction. 2) We did the hike in early October. Temps were around zero, with a noticeable wind. So the first hour+ , which are mainly in the forest, were VERY cold. Still it's worth it once you come out of the tree line.
