The name Massif des Maures means “Black Mountains,” a reference to the dark rock and dense forest. The name derives from the Occitan word *maouro* (black). The hike takes us to one of the highest points of the massif, the Roman Catholic pilgrimage chapel of Notre-Dame-des-Anges.▶ From the parking lot on the D 39 01, we take the dirt road behind the gate and follow the white-and-red markings of the GR9 long-distance hiking trail along the Route des Crêtes. Accompanied by beautiful viewpoints, the trail winds its way across the ridge. At junction 02, we leave the GR9 and turn right. Immediately after that, the trail forks, and we take the path slightly to the right. The trail is now marked with white and green for a short stretch. It heads downhill past scattered houses. At first, large chestnut trees line the trail; later, we hike among tall cork oaks. We stay on the main trail until we reach the D 39 03 country road. There, we turn left, then turn right at the next signpost toward Collobrières. The trail leads us past residential houses, downhill into a valley 04. We take the small road to the right and follow it for quite a distance, now marked with the white-and-red markings of the GR90. At a curve, we leave the road and take a narrow path uphill. A signpost 05 points the way to the Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Anges. Time and again, we take shortcuts across trails to avoid the road until we reach the Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Anges 06 at the same elevation. There, we rejoin the GR9, which we follow—partly on the road and partly on shortcut trails—toward Col des Fourches and back to our starting point at the parking lot on the D 39 01.

About the Pilgrimage Path to the Holy Summit ChapelOn the second highest hill of the Mauren massif – only the Signal de la Sauvette is a few meters higher – a sacred building is said to have been established by the troops of King Theoderich I. about 1500 years ago after the successful battle against the Visigoths. Apparently, a wide view of the landscape has always inspired religious feelings.Over the centuries, the structure was replaced or expanded by others. The impressive chapel seen today was enhanced around 1900 with a cloister. At first glance, it looks like there is a large tower behind the chapel, which turns out to be a radio mast. From the valley village of Pignans, a mountain path, the Sentier des Oratoires ("Chapel Path"), leads almost in a straight line to the summit plateau. Along the rocky path, there are several wayside shrines where pilgrims can perform a short prayer. Even without religious intentions, the ascent to the chapel Notre-Dame des Anges is quite an experience, both in close contact with the evergreen forests of maritime pines and oaks and with the view over the hilly landscape to the coast with the Îles d’Hyères. Perhaps there is even an additional benefit, as according to legend, this pilgrimage is said to cure laziness.
