Breathtaking ridge walk close to the abyssXorret de Catí is one of the most beautiful recreational areas on the Costa Blanca. On this exciting hike over the almost 5 km long mountain ridge of the Sierra del Fraile, the 126 ha nature reserve is literally at our feet: extensive pine forests stretch between the 1200 m high mountain massif of the Maigmó and the Sierra del Cid. Embedded in them are old, abandoned farmsteads and still well-tended terraced fields with olive and almond trees - a cultural landscape as if from another time. We start by hiking through the small gorge of the Barranc del Badallet, scramble down an ancient dam wall into a narrow gorge and then climb the "Crestería del Fraile", the long ridge. At the end, the 1259 m high Despenyador rewards us with a wonderful view, even as far as the sea on a clear day.

This circular tour offers hardly any wishes for variety unfulfilled: It repeatedly surprises with wonderful views near and far, invites us to rest at a lonely chapel, and amazes us with a perforated rock, Valencian La Foradada. Afterwards, a shady pine forest and a wild-grown miniature gorge await us – both pleasantly cool even in summer. A hike that is also entertaining for children.

Through a small stream valley to a beautiful panoramic peakThe Sierra del Cid forms the southern boundary of the Xorret de Catí nature reserve. From Rabosa, we approach its north face through the pretty little valley of the Barranc de Xolí. It seems impregnable, and yet a narrow path leads up to the plateau: on the path called El Comptador, "the counter", it is easy to count the sheep and goats walking one behind the other. A wonderful panoramic view over mountains, valleys and as far as the sea awaits us at the summit.
