Rocky coast at the easternmost point of ItalyThe hike along the rocky coast offers an uninterrupted view of the sea. The path through rock-strewn meadows fascinates with its vast barrenness, adorned in spring by orchids and other blossoms, with wild asparagus growing in some corners. The popular bathing bay Porto Badisco is an estuary, meaning a river mouth into which the sea has intruded. However, only a stream remains of the river, which dries up in summer. Along the way, the medieval watchtower Torre Sant’Emiliano towers above the cliff coast. In the past, people kept lookout for pirates here; today, we enjoy the view over the coast and, in clear weather, as far as Albania. Climbing routes are set up on the rock face below the tower. The easternmost point of Italy, Capo d’Otranto, is the destination of the hike. The rocky cape is located further east than Vienna and Wrocław.

Otranto is a very beautiful city to visit and, to escape the flow of tourists in its small streets, nothing beats a tour of the old bauxite mining quarry and then returning along the seafront.

Sea beach and inland lakesThe Alimini lakes are two elongated fresh and brackish water lakes, fed by streams and springs at the lakebed and connected to the sea by a short channel. They were long used for irrigating the surrounding fields and were fished. Today they are a nature reserve. Only a narrow strip of land separates the lakes from the Adriatic Sea, whose long sandy beach offers soft relaxation for tired walkers.
